Cubs-Pirates stopped by rain

PITTSBURGH — The Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates played to the first tie game in the major leagues since 2005 when rain forced the teams to stop in the sixth inning Thursday night with the score 1-all.

The Cubs and Pirates aren’t scheduled to play again this season, and the game won’t be made up because it doesn’t affect postseason positioning. So instead of becoming a suspended game, the stats count and it was declared a tie — the first since Houston and Cincinnati went seven innings on June 30, 2005, before rain halted them.

Willson Contreras had two hits and scored for the NL Central champion Cubs, who have already clinched the best record in the majors. Josh Bell hit a sacrifice fly for the Pirates.

The game was called after a delay of 1 hour, 23 minutes.

Pitt, WVU back playing hoops

PITTSBURGH — The basketball version of the “Backyard Brawl” is back.

Pittsburgh and West Virginia announced Thursday that the regional rivalry between the two schools long known as the “Backyard Brawl” will resume in 2017, when the men’s basketball teams begin a four-year series.

The Panthers will host the Mountaineers in 2017 and 2019, with West Virginia welcoming Pitt in 2018 and 2020.

The two teams met regularly between 1906 and 2012, with West Virginia holding a 96-88 advantage in the series. The rivalry was temporarily abandoned after Pitt left the Big East for the ACC and West Virginia joined the Big 12.

Gordon to enter rehab

CLEVELAND — Josh Gordon, the suspended Cleveland Browns wide receiver, whose talent has been little more than a tease for several years as he battled personal demons, said Thursday he’s entering rehab and putting his promising NFL career on hold.

Gordon was eligible to return from his latest four-game suspension next week.

However, the troubled Gordon’s future is again uncertain after he chose to seek professional help.
