Brooke’s Sesto adds football to her busy schedule
WELLSBURG — Brooke junior Sierra Sesto has high career goals, and she is already putting in the work to achieve them. Determined to pursue a profession as a lawyer, Sesto has an internship with the William Galloway Law Office in Weirton. She handles the normal paperwork that comes in a working office, but she also has the chance to delve into the action, like an actual attorney.
“I get to handle real cases with Mr. Galloway,” Sesto said. “I read and listen to documents from the case, interviews, testimonies and I look up articles that may pertain to the case. I write notes on the items and I help organize papers and file them.”
She even offers opinions with decisions and attends all court dates.
That, alone, is a heavy workload for a teenager. Yet, Sesto still puts in a full day of classes, as well as soccer practice with the Bruins. This year, she has added another facet to her busy schedule.
Sesto is a member of the Brooke football team.
Because of her extended background playing soccer, becoming a kicker was a natural fit.
“I joined the football team because I knew their previous kicker (Jacob Kennedy) had graduated, so I thought I’d give it a try,” Sesto said. “My favorite part about joining the team is that all the boys treat me like their little sister. They always push me to do my best, no matter what the challenge is. I haven’t gotten on the field at all this year due to my pelvis not being in its proper place, but I am proud of our current kicker (Noah Horvath) for stepping up and taking on the position as a freshman.”
Just because she isn’t able to perform at 100-percent doesn’t mean she isn’t there for her teammates, each step of the way.
“Every Friday I dress with the football team to show that even though I may not be able to travel with them, I am still thinking about them,” Sesto said. “No matter what, win or lose, this is a team I am proud to be on. Due to my injury, I’m only able to attend home football games because it hurts to stand or sit for too long.”
In the summer, Sesto was still working out in preparation for the fall season. Keeping that determined attitude, she did not give herself much of a break, even after completing her sophomore year of high school. When she knew she had the opportunity to join the football team, she dedicated herself to take full advantage of her chance.
“During the offseason, I was at every football and soccer practice,” Sesto said. “When school started I was only able to attend soccer practices. The only thing I’ve had to change due to football was the way I manage my time with homework, family, my internship and spending more time with both the football and soccer team.”
Sesto has attempted to kick field goals from various lengths across the field. She warmed up and practiced mainly going from 15 yards out and has successfully been able to go through the uprights consistently.
Soccer, of course, is her first love and she maintains her passion for the sport. Her favorite part of playing soccer is growing and developing with the same set of teammates that she has known for nearly a decade.
“I started playing soccer when I was about 5,” she said. “The best part about soccer is the girls I get to play with. The girls I played with when I was 9 years old still play with me today. We know each other’s moves like the back of our hands. It’s like we read each other’s minds when we go for moves. This year hasn’t really gone in our favor, but I wouldn’t want to go down fighting with anyone else by my side. My teammates are strong competitors who have had to play pretty much every game with nine or 10 players on the field due to several injuries. Still, they never give up.”
Neither will Sesto. Once her injury is mended she hopes to be back on the field, in game action, with both sets of teammates. In the meantime, she continues to work to her full ability in the classroom and in the office.
