Madonna defeats Brooke

WEIRTON — The Madonna girls soccer team used three second-half goals for a 4-1 win over visiting Brooke Monday at the J.C. Williams Soccer Complex.

For Blue Dons coach Bob Kolanko, it was an OVAC championship hangover.

“It absolutely was,” he said, “and you know that coming into the game. It was the same last year after we lost to Linsly.”

Madonna beat Wheeling Central, 1-0, Saturday for the Class 1A/3A title on a Hayley Timko golden goal in overtime.

“Some of the girls took it very lightly coming out here today and it showed,” Kolanko said.

Emma Burns scored nine minutes into the game off a pass from Kali Krynicki for a 1-0 Dons lead.

“We broke the ice right there and then it took a long time to get another one,” Kolanko said.

Bruins and head coach Elias Hannaoui are still playing shorthanded.

“It’s the first time we have experienced this short roster,” he said. “We knew today’s game was going to be rough against the OVAC champion. They are very well coached. It’s hard to play Madonna with 11, but playing 10 just made it even harder.”

Burns scored in the second half from freshman Kail Krynicki, then Hayley Timko (from Burns) made it 3-0.

Leila Hannaoui scored for Brooke, but Krynicki finished the scoring off a Gianna Antinone pass.

“You’re watching Leila and you’re watching Emily (Bernardini) and No. 2 (Kaycee Grzybek) comes out of nowhere and makes plays,” Kolanko said. “She played a very good game. I was very impressed with her.”

Brooke hosts Oak Glen Thursday for Senior Night.

“We just have to go through our schedule and, hopefully by the playoffs, we get at least two more players back,” coach Hannaoui said. “That’s our hope. For now, I think there is a chance for that.

“We have three weeks, and if we can get at least two, that would be great.”

Madonna is 11-3 and welcomes Linsly at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Ravenswood at 11 a.m. Saturday and Wheeling Central at 5 p.m. Monday.

“You can’t be at this stage of the season and say everything is wonderful,” Kolanko said. “You need to be able to find some things that you need to improve because we have sectionals coming up in a couple of weeks.”

Kasey Canei made three saves for Madonna and Gaby Snyder six for Brooke.
