A pair moves on for Brooke

HUNTINGTON — Eleven Ohio Valley Athletic Conference wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals in the 70th annual W.Va. state tournament Thursday night inside Big Sandy Superstore Arena.

Wheeling Park led the local contingent with six winners, while John Marshall had three and Brooke a pair.

The Patriots were listed in a third-place tie with Hampshire. Both earned 20 points.

“I’m happy with the way we wrestled tonight,” second-year Wheeling Park head coach Clay Tucker said. “We prepare our kids to wrestle their best at this time of the season, and we did that in some matches tonight.”

Wheeling Park winners included Canon Welker (113), Maison Richardson (120), Jeremiah Timberlake (138), John Nash (160), Mason Miklas (182) and Austin Lowe (195).

“We had a couple of matchups where we finished third and fourth in the region and were paired with kids that finished first and second.

“We did pretty good in those bouts.”

Welker, Nash and Loew all won by falls, with Richardson and Timberlake prevailing by major decisions.

John Marshall head coach Ted Zervos was a little puzzled with the results.

“We had three of our better kids not have the opportunity to wrestle tonight,” he stressed. “It’s been a tough day.”

Monarchs having their hands raised included Jordan Wood (120), Austin Love (126) and Nathan Simmons (285). Wood won by pin while Love and Simmons earned decisions.

John Marshall’s Anthony Carman (138) was not permitted to wrestle due to a skin infection. He placed fourth last year.

“I’m just upset that he wasn’t treated the same as kids in AAA.”

The Bruins advancing were Max Camilletti (132) and Alex Edgell (220). Camilletti won 10-0 and Edgell 9-3.

“I’m really happy for Max,” first-year Brooke head coach Dan Doyle said. “He was really nervous coming in, so it was good for to be as dominating as he was.

“Alex went out and performed like he has all year,” Doyle said.

Edgell placed sixth a year ago.

Parkersburg South controls the team standings with 35 points, five more than University.
