Big Red claims sectional crown

NEWARK — The Steubenville wrestling team advanced all 14 to the Division II district tournament next weekend at Heath High School.

That allowed Big Red a 99.5-point victory in the team standings at the sectional tournament Saturday at Licking Valley High School.

Steubenville scored 273 points. Cal. River Valley was second at 173.5 and London third with 122.

Big Red had six sectional champs — Peyton Blasko (106 pounds), Tim Young (113), Jason Hubbard (145), David Tuttle (160), Hezekiah Scurry (195) and Tyler Ely (285).

Anthony Rice (138), Nick Scott (152) and Billy Snyder (182) finished second, Bill Murray (120) and Zane Minella (126) third and Michael Gray (132), Keith Bodnar (170) and Drone Moore (220) fourth.

Indian Creek advanced three to the district tournament next week with its showing Saturday at Claymont High School.

Miles Mazik dropped a 4-2 decision at 145 pounds to the Mustangs’ Briar Cadle and Sam Robinson was pinned in 78 seconds by Sam Mitchell of River View.

Michael Grimm placed fourth at 113 after a 5-4 loss to River View’s Hayden Martin.

The Redskins finished seventh in the team standings with 91¢ points. Claymont won with 238 points, while Beaver Local was second with 206¢.

Division III

Edison will send five wrestlers to the district tournament next weekend in Coshocton and all won sectional titles Saturday at Sandy Valley.

River Pappas claimed the 220 crown with a 12-1 major decision over James Kedigh of Ridgewood. Seth Cade was triumphant at 152 after a 5-1 decision over Sandy Valley’s Hunter Stoffer.

Mark Johns pinned Garaway’s Dylan Hershberger in 92 seconds at 138, Josh Kleiner pinned Malvern’s Joshua Gastin in 4:31 at 120, and James Torres nipped Sandy Valley’s Cooper Hemming 6-4 in overtime at 113.

Garaway won the team trophy with 173 points, 2¢ clear of Ridgewood. Sandy Valley was third (127¢), Edison fourth (124) and Harrison Central fifth (121). Toronto finished with 21 points.

The Huskies had two runners-up as Blayne Erwin dropped a 3-2 decision to Garaway’s Gunnar Angel and Brenton Stull was pinned in 1:57 at 285 by Sandy Valley’s Francesco Borsellino.

Also qualifying for the district meet were Harrison Central’s Owen Ott (third, 113), Tucker Coultrap (third, 170), Josh Croft (third, 220), Jacob Delucas (fourth, 145) and Malcolm Boyer (160), and Toronto’s Cole Harris (fourth, 113) and Kyre Smith (fourth, 126).

At Barnesville, Steubenville Catholic Central’s Hayden Daley claimed the top step of the podium with a 2-1 UTP victory over Martins Ferry’s Drake Dobson at 160 pounds.

Buckeye Local’s Jason Binkiewicz grabbed the 170-pound crown with a pin of Crusader Michael Herrmann in 89 seconds.

The Panthers also had two runners-up in Jake Miller (132) and Shayne Christian (182).

Shadyside captured the team title with 169 points. Bridgeport was second at 135¢, Barnesville third (130), Martins Ferry fourth (127) and Buckeye Local fifth (112¢). Central totaled 60 points for 10th.

Also advancing to next weekend’s district tournament in Coshocton are Central’s Kevin Cuervo (220, third) and the Panthers’ Jack Reese (160, fourth) and Zac Cesario (195, fourth).
