Steubenville slams Red Riders in softball

STEUBENVILLE — The Steubenville softball team has been smacking the ball all around the field lately and Monday was no exception.

Big Red totaled 20 hits, including a pair of home runs by Na Banks — the second being a rocket — in an 18-2 victory over visiting Weir High at Franciscan University of Steubenville in 4¢ innings.

“Na, Hayley (Stamps), Kameron (DiMarzio) are hitting well, and Rhiannon (Petrisko) is coming back, and Jaliyah (Hubbard) is figuring things out,” Big Red head coach Guz DiMarzio said. “I don’t know if it’s the snowball effect, or something else. But, whatever it is, it’s working and I’m trying not to break it up.

“I try to stay out of the way, getting them water and a towel and say, ‘good job.'”

Big Red is 7-0 and has 57 hits and 52 runs in its last three games.

“We work and work and work on the same stuff over and over again,” DiMarzio said. “We drill over and over. I think doing the little things is helping us because we’re working trying to get to big things.

“We’re not reinventing the wheel. We’re putting good swings on good pitches and, luckily for us, we’re getting good results.”

Banks, the school’s all-time hits leader, finished with a half-dozen RBIs, thanks to a first-inning grand slam. Petrisko doubled and singled twice, Hubbard doubled and singled three times, Stamps doubled and singled and freshman Madison Fields — the winning pitcher — singled and doubled.

“We ran into a really good program that is playing great softball,” Red Riders head coach Frank Sissini said. “They are undefeated for a reason.

“We have to play games better between the ears. We’re making mistakes that shouldn’t be going on and that falls on me. We’re making base-running mistakes. We’ll get that corrected.

“We play teams like Big Red for a reason.

“Every day is a grind and our kids are trying. We’re still progressing and getting better.

“Today just wasn’t a very good day.”

Weir took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when losing pitcher Mariah Stevens launched a two-out solo home run.

The Red Riders go to Beaver Local today.

Big Red is off until Saturday.
