STEUBENVILLE — City bragging rights belong to Big Red.

The Big Red girls’ soccer team netted three goals in each half en route to a 6-2 victory over city-rival Catholic Central in the “Together We Care” Breast Cancer Awareness Soccer Tournament Saturday inside Harding Stadium to sweep the season series.

“Everything we have been working on started to click today,” Big Red (7-5-1) coach Jared Robinson said. “We had good ball movement. We connected to feet. We came together. We moved the ball. We found the open man, we found the open lane and we finished. We finished in the first half, and we finished in the second half.”

Catholic Central scored both of its goals in the second half. The Crusaders pulled to within two goals a couple of times, but Big Red was able to regain the momentum.

“They were able to score goals, which was good on their part,” first-year Catholic Central (3-12) coach Katrina Fabian said. “We stuck with them. We kind of gave them their goals. They did not take time to shoot. They had a lot of shots. That was definitely in the favor. They had a lot of shots.”

Six players scored goals for Big Red. Myla Gulan, Makayla Crownover, Michaela Brancazio, Jadyn Bennett, Mary Marshall and Sarah Brown all found the back of the net.

Also, Sean Ragusa, Bennett, Marshall and Brancazio all collected an assist for the victors.

Zoe Nocera recorded four saves in goal for Big Red.

Ali Grimm and Rebecca Bodo both delivered a goal for the Crusaders.

Bri DeChristopher recorded 15 saves in goal.

Melanie Mamula was named MVP for Big Red.

“Good for her,” Robinson said. “She had a knee injury, and she wasn’t able to play the first time we played against them. She is crucial in the center, on offense and on defense. She had a lot of quality time. She made a lot of passes that we were able to build on.

“She played against (Allie) Zapolnik. She played her very tough. She took her out of the game. She deserves it. She is a hard worker.”

Grimm was named MVP for Catholic Central.

“She played a really good game,” Fabian said. “She has improved a lot. It has shown. She had a lot of really nice passes, and she was also able to score a goal.”

Big Red is scheduled to play at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Brooke. Catholic Central is slated to play at 5 p.m. Thursday down at John Marshall.
