CONNORVILLE — A pair of Buckeye 8 wrestling teams trying to get back to where they were not too many years ago met in a dual meet Wednesday night at Buckeye Local High School.

When it was all said and done, Harrison Central (1-1) used five first-period pins in recording a 63-18 triumph over the homestanding Panthers (0-3). All told, the Huskies had seven falls, two forfeit wins, a decision and a win by injury default.

“We opened up last week against Claymont, and we had some very well-contested matches,” Harrison Central head coach Bill Bryant said of the perennial state power that won the Barnesville Doan Ford Invitational last weekend. “Not every match went our way, and by no means did I figure on winning last week, but we went out and battled. In the matches that we did battle in, we ended up on our backs. The final score didn’t really indicate how tough we competed against them.

“Tonight, we came out and got a couple of quick pins early that got us going. I thought, overall, we wrestled well.”

Buckeye Local head coach Willie Saxton knew the odds were against his youthful squad entering the match. He thinks they might have learned something from the loss.

“We’re extremely young. It’s a huge rebuilding stage for us right now, and I don’t like where we are at right now,” he said. “I want it to get better, but it’s on the kids. They have to have heart. If they don’t have the heart and the pride, it’s not going to get done. For this program to rise back up to where it once was, these kids have to have heart and pride.”

The match started at 160 pounds, and Harrison Central didn’t waste any time in taking command.

The Huskies used a first-period pin by Zack Marbais at 160 for a 6-0 lead and then went up 12-0 when Luke McKinney was awarded a win at 170 when Buckeye Local’s Jack Reese suffered a shoulder injury 10 seconds into their bout.

Blayne Erwin, a returning Division III district qualifier, held off Shayne Christian at 182, 8-4, as the margin grew to 15-0.

The Huskies flexed their muscle in the next three heavyweight bouts as Cody Gamble, another returning district qualifier, pinned his opponent in 1:23 while Josh Croft led 9-3 before pinning his foe in 5:41 at 220. Erik Perry made quick work of his heavyweight opponent with a pin in 1:55 as the lead grew to 33-0.

The Panthers finally got on the board with a forfeit win at 106 by Caleb Bonar. However, the Huskies got those six points right back when three-time district qualifier Owen Ott recorded a 46-second fall at 113.

Buckeye Local’s Brian Palmer Jr. picked up a forfeit at 120 to make it 39-12, but the Huskies sealed the deal with a come-from-behind victory by pin at 126 by Zane Everhart. He trailed Buckeye Local’s Travis Light 4-1 entering the second period before securing a cradle for the win in 3:04.

“That was a big win,” Bryant said. “We were losing and took the top position to start the second (period). Our kid got the cradle in there and listened very well. He tucked his elbow in nice and tight and got the fall.”

Back-to-back forfeits for Austin Howard (132) and Andrew Drapp (138), along by Bryce Wade’s 62-second pin at 145 concluded the Huskies scoring.

Buckeye Local won the final match of the night when Skyler Hatten pinned his opponent in 1:18 while leading 6-2. He had trailed 2-0 before recording an escape and takedown that led to back points and the fall.

“I’m good with his win. He hasn’t had his best matches of late, but that right there showed he has heart,” Saxton said. “He got taken down early and came back to get a pin. That’s the heart that he needs to show.”
