Golden Bears fall flat to the Potters
NEW CUMBERLAND — The East Liverpool wrestling team defeated Oak Glen, 37-32, in a dual meet on Wednesday at Oak Glen High School.
“It was a group effort tonight,” East Liverpool coach Scott Hiemstra said. “From the seniors down, they did the best that they could to make sure that we won this dual. Most of these kids have been wrestling for awhile, and they just know they have to get better each week.”
Hiemstra was impressed by Nathan Miscuk’s pin over Kyle O’Connor in a 182-pound bout.
“This is a kid that is a senior and picked up a big pin for the team,” Hiemstra said.
Hiemstra was also impressed by Michael Buchheit’s performance in his defeat against Logan Konchar in a 120-pound match.
“Buchhiet came up to me wanting to go up (weight class) this week,” Hiemstra said. “He said he thought he could help the team and he did by not taking the pin.”
Buchheit normally wrestles in the 113 weight class.
Oak Glen fought back in the match after being down early.
“It was an up-and-down performance,” Oak Glen coach Pat McGillian said. “We came out of the gate slow and went down 19-0. It just wasn’t our night. We wrestled real sloppy and a lot of things we work on in practice didn’t translate to the mat tonight.”
East Liverpool wrestles next at the Wheeling Park Duals on Dec. 28.
Oak Glen wrestles at the Hoppel Invitational on Saturday at Beaver Local.
