NEW MANCHESTER — As has been the case more times than not in coach Rusty Hodgkiss’ second season at the helm of the Toronto girls basketball team, the Red Knights got off to a slow start Friday night at Oak Glen.

They overcame it, however, as they got going in the second quarter and pulled away for a 53-38 victory over the Golden Bears.

“That’s our thing; we get off to slow starts,” Hodgkiss said. “Our first quarter is our worst quarter every night. Their halfcourt pressure kind of sped is up and made us a little crazy but after we adjusted we were ok.”

Oak Glen (0-4) got off to a fast start, going on an 11-0 run after Toronto (2-2) had put the first points on the board. Toronto committed 14 of its 32 turnovers in the opening quarter.

The Red Knights responded with eight of the next 10 to end the first down just 13-10.

Toronto took the lead for the first time on a three-pointer from Bianca McDonald in the final minute of the second, and it would not look back.

Toronto scored the first six points of the second half, and led by nine headed to the fourth, pulling away even further in the final eight minutes to win by 15.

Gina Fogle led the Red Knights with a game-high 14 points, four assists and 12 rebounds.

“She’s tough,” Hodgkiss said of Fogle. “She’s our conscious. If she has a good night, we have a good night.”

Jozaeyah Jordan followed close behind with 13 points, three assists and six rebounds.

Oak Glen got nine points and three boards from Brittney Giorgini.

Oak Glen won the jayvee matchup 42-29, led by 18 points from Brooklyn Loveland. Toronto got nine from Madison Roach.
