Two Redskins, two Wildcats and a Blue Don win at Rick Link tourney
MORRISTOWN — Barnesvilleás Jayson Stephen had a hunch about his team prior to competing in the Rick Link Union Local wrestling tournament Saturday.
The Shamrocks proved him right as they piled up 198 points, which was three more than runner up and defending champion Indian Creek, as the high school season got under way inside àThe Hangar.á
âI never try and tell a team how good they are. Theyáve got to show it and prove it, but I did tell them if they came together there was a possibility we could win this tournament,ã Stephen said. âYou donát want them to think there at the top before they go out and perform.
âA lot of kids came through. Iáve got a lot of young kids, and we even had a couple of kids out of the lineup, so once we get those guys in there and some other guys in the right weight classes, I think we can continue this success throughout the year.
âIt was definitely a nice way to begin the season.ã
Barnesville had a pair of champions in freshman Caedan Yager at 113 and Bryce Farrabee at 132. Yager posted a pin of Genevaás Dustin Sweeney in 1:34, while Farrabee pinned teammate Austin Holskey, who was competing as unattached, in 2:56.
âCaedan is actually our àBá kid. Our àAá kid (AJ Francis) ended up taking third. They met in the semifinals, but it was a tight wrestle-off, too,ã Stephen explained. âYager will be at 106 next week, so today was a good day for him.
âFarrabee beat our àBá kid, so it was nice to have two of them in the finals.ã
Barnesville also had runnerups in George Hoover (120), Cameron Woods (145), Owen Oliver (152) and Brylan Clouse (160).
Other local champions included Bridgeportás duo of Mason Kuneff (138) and Tino Kusic (160); Edisonás tandem of Ethan Pappas (170) and River Pappas (220); Indian Creekás pair of Mitch Wukelic (145) and Devin Eakle (152); Shadysideás Josh Robinson (285); Union Localás Riley Crall (126) and Weirton Madonnaás Garrett Cook (182).
Kuneff, who blanked Indian Creekás PJ Mazik, 3-0, was named the tournamentás Most Outstanding Wrestler.
Also winning titles were Beaver Localás Colton Dugan (106) and Sam Lowe (195); and Genevaás Johnny Wayslaw (120).
Geneva finished third in the team standings with 186 points. Shenandoah was fourth at 121 and Edison rounded out the top 5 with 108.
