ST. CLAIRSVILLE — It was “The Cody Ray-Ty Kildow Show” on Saturday afternoon at OUE.

Ray scored a game-high 20 points, and Kildow dropped in 16 as Union Local raced past Toronto, 60-48, in the second game of the Buckeye 8 Challenge inside the college’s Physical Education and Recreation Center.

“We did a good job of taking what they gave us,” UL head coavh Zach Delman said. “Cody did a nice job at taking advantage of his opportunities in the first half.”

The Jets ended the first 16 minutes on a 20-7 run that broke a 12-12 tie, which triggered the win. Ray scored 13 of his points in the second, many coming off nifty feeds from teammates.

The inability to halt UL’s penetration was a detrement to the Red Knights’ success, according to Toronto head coach Sean Tucker.

“We didn’t do a very good job of keeping them in front of us,” he said. “We just weren’t very effective defensively.”

With the score knotted at 12, Cal Kildow made a layup and then Ray scored five straight, the final three coming on a 3-point play. After a Trillion West bucket got Toronto make to within five at 19-14, the Jets (7-1) reeled off seven straight, led by Ty Kildow’s five points. He finished with 15.

Union Local ended the half on a 6-2 run, with Ray scoring all six of the Jets’ points.

“We wanted to make every possession count,” said Delman, who’s team’s only loss thus far came to Wheeling Park in the Sam Andy Classic. “We were looking for high-percentage shots.

“We have very unselfish players on this team and that’s what we’ll need to be successful.”

Ty Kildow started the second half with four straight points as UL built a 36-19 lead, which was their biggest of the day.

Nate Karaffa. who paced the Red Knights (5-3) with 16 points, scored with 3:45 left in the game to trim Toronto’s deficit to eight, but the squad from Jefferson County got no closer.

Nick Sninchak added 13 points for the Red Knights, who visit Malvern on Friday.

The Jets also return to action Friday, playing host to John Marshall.
