Buckeye North Alumni Reunion scheduled Saturday

BRILLIANT — The Buckeye North Alumni Reunion classes of 1973 through 1990 will be held from 3 p.m. to midnight Saturday at the shelter in Brilliant next to the old Buckeye North High School football field.

The BYOB event will include food, drinks, music and 50/50 drawings. Attendees are encouraged to bring yard games.

The reunion falls during landmark years for the Class of 1987, marking its 30-year reunion, the Class of 1982 marking its 35-year reunion and the Class of 1977 marking its 40-year reunion.

Weirton library to show

Smurf movie Aug. 12

WEIRTON — The Mary H. Weir Public Library will show the PG-rated “Smurfs: The Lost Village” at 2 p.m. Aug. 12 in the library’s activity room located at 3442 Main St.

The Smurfs find a mysterious map through the Forbidden Forest, which leads them to discover the deepest secret in Smurf history.

Admission to “the Smurftastic event” is free as are popcorn and ice water. Patrons who would like to bring their own soft drinks or snacks are welcome to do so.

The handicapped-accessible doors on Walnut Street will open at 1:45 p.m.

Three Score Seniors hear

from president of museum

WEIRTON — President Kathy McCarrick of Three Score Seniors Group presided at the July meeting where Mary Margaret Klepadlo gave the invocation and benediction.

George Pohlman read “Outdoor Bar-B-Q” as seen from a man’s point of view.

Following dinner Vice President Mary Ellen Groves introduced Dennis Jones, president of the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center, who showed “Hi Speed Steel,” which was produced for National Steel Corp. in 1969 and was preserved by the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center with the cooperation of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. The 16-minute film explains how Weirton Steel’s Basic Oxygen Furnace operations that greatly streamlined the steel-making process, according to information on the center’s website.

A question-and-answer period followed, and Jones also discussed the museum and its changes.

Reports were given by Secretary Barbara Purks and Treasurer George Pohlman.

Membership Nancy Smurda welcomed Cindy Richards and Nick Dragisich as new members. Brenda Edwards took pictures to be included in the albums.

A birthday and anniversaries were acknowledged.

Social Chairmen Joe and Cookie Veltri conducted bingo after the meeting.

Marlene Hare introduced Aggie and Nancy Lelli, guests of Larry and Barbara Purks, and Herb and Mary Jo Ross, guests of Bob and Jane Watson. The menu for August was given.

Regina Truax updated members on trips, including Aug. 23, Hard Rock Casino; Sept. 24, Pirates baseball game; Oct. 6, Applefest in Franklin, Pa.; and Oct. 22-28, Myrtle Beach. For information, contact Truax at (304) 723-0419.

Hospitality Chair Jim Hare awarded prizes to Pat Evano, Larry Purks and Brenda Edwards. Jack Cummings and Sonny Marino gave the 50/50 drawing to Larry Purks with Undo’s dinners going to Brenda Edwards and Larry Purks, given by Betty Virtue and Cookie Veltri. Dairy Queen gift cards went to Nancy Smurda, Ernie Andrews and Carla Glover.

The next meeting will be held Aug. 24. Information on the group can be obtained from any member.

Pancake breakfast fundraiser

for Amazing Grace Pillowcase

STEUBENVILLE — A pancake breakfast sponsored by Applebee’s of Steubenville from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday will generate proceeds for the Amazing Grace Pillowcase ministry.

Tickets are $5 per person and are available at the door or in advance by contacting Amazing Grace Pillowcase by phone at (740) 944-1105 or by e-mail at agpillowcase@aol.com.

Proceeds will be used to purchase fabric to make pillowcases for hospitalized children and for Valley Hospice and Charity Hospice veterans, according to Mary J. Albaugh, founder.

Classic car cruise-in scheduled

Saturday at Sally Buffalo Park

CADIZ — A classic car cruise-in to benefit the Harrison County Cancer Crusaders will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Sally Buffalo Park’s Wallace Lodge, Cadiz.

There is a $5 registration fee, and dash plaques will be awarded to the first 50 cars.

Oldies music will be provided by B-S#arp Productions and disc jockey Ronnie Beaird.

The fundraiser also will include a 50-50 drawing and a Chinese auction.

RICHMOND — The Order of Eastern Star, Unionport Chapter No. 360, will hold a bake sale and yard sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday.

It will be held at McConnell’s Meat Market, which is located at 2189 state Route 43, Richmond.
