Helping to feed the hungry

-- Contributed

The Rev. Dennis Schulkens, pastor at Saint Joseph and Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Churches, in his weekly school Mass asked students to, “step up to the plate.” He explained that in the Gospel from Matthew, Jesus is asked, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?” Jesus replied, “When you did it for the least of my brothers.” That led to Deacon Vince Olenick, eighth-grade teacher, asked his eighth-graders if they were willing to “step up to the plate” and help feed the hungry. And so they did, on Dec. 15, when the entire eighth-grade visited the Community Bread Basket at 3501 West St., Weirton, and helped distribute food to those asking for help. The all-volunteer staff was so pleased with the performance of the eighth-grader, according to Tara Sheperd, program administrator, that they invited them to a luncheon held when the distribution was completed. “These eighth-graders are so kind and generous with their time. They also are so polite and a great group to be around. They truly ‘stepped up to the plate’,” Sheperd added. Participating were, front row, from left, Shania Sheperd, Kory Kakasic, Nate Elias and Trey Kush; second row, Angelina Spickard, Nina Daughtery and Anna Backel; third row, Eliza Greco, Sophia DiBacco, Maura Ruiz, Adam Burdette and Deacon Vince Olenick; fourth row, Isabella Pulice, Olivia Timko and Thomas Ralston; and back, Andrew Kochman, Lennon Dietrich, Santino Arlia, Nick Elias and Tara Sheperd.
