Festival in the Woods returns

Saturday to Richmond Park

RICHMOND — Festival in the Woods will return to the Richmond Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The fall craft festival was a local staple until it was discontinued several years ago, according to Kim Richardson, committee chair.

“It is now back and offers everything festival-goers have come to expect and more,” she noted.

Festival organizers expect nearly 100 vendors offering art, crafts, baked goods and seasonal items, and there will be live entertainment throughout the day. For the children, there will be inflatables by Movin’ & Groovin’ Productions with an all-day ride pass offered for $5.

Admission to the festival is free.

The Richmond Lions Club will have various hot food offerings for sale, including chicken sandwiches, sloppy joes, pulled pork sandwiches and hot dogs, as well as various side dishes and drinks.

The Richmond Boy Scouts Troop 20 will be selling pulled beef and chili.

Parking will be limited at the park, but additional parking will be available at the Richmond United Methodist Church and at Edison High School with free shuttles provided from both locations.

Country Friends announces

lineup of entertainment

COLLIERS — Country Friends will host the Buffington Brothers on Friday and US on Saturday at the Memorial Hall located at 67 Police Lodge Road, Colliers.

The doors open at 6 p.m, the dance starts at 7 p.m., and the hall closes at 10 p.m. for both events. There is a $5 cover charge per person on dance nights.

Open mic is Monday. The doors open at 4 p.m., the covered-dish meal is served at 5 p.m., and open mic begins at 6 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m. There is no cover charge on Mondays, but donations are appreciated.

The last Friday of the month is gospel or charity night with a donation made to a church or charity.

Country Friends Foundation Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Christian friendship and brotherly love through music. All proceeds go to charity. Two DJ karaoke events

at Toronto American Legion

TORONTO — The Toronto American Legion Post 86 will sponsor two DJ/karaoke events in October, both of which are open to the public.

The first one will involve DJ Teddy from 8 p.m. to midnight on Saturday.

The other one will involve DJ Mac, who will host a Halloween party and dance from 8 p.m. to midnight on Oct. 27. The Legion is located at 415 Market St. The phone number is (740) 537-9317.

Annual Crusader 5K Run/Walk,

Fall Fest scheduled for Oct. 13

STEUBENVILLE — The fourth-annual Crusader 5K Run/Walk and Fall Fest with a Little Saints Sprint will be held Oct. 13 on the fields and trails of Catholic Central High School’s Athletic Complex in Steubenville.

Chip-timing services and online race results will be available for the 5K. Awards will be given to the top male and female runner overall, and the top male and female finisher in each age category. Top finishers in each age group in the Little Saints Sprint also will receive an award.

The $5 admission to the fall fest includes registration for the Little Saints Sprint, games, face painting and crafts. The 5K Run/Walk pre-registration is $20 for adults and $10 for students. Onsite registration is $25 for adults and $15 students. Everyone registering for the 5K by Friday will receive a free T-shirt. Register online until Oct.12 at runtheday.com, (keyword: Crusader 5K) or pick up a registration form at Bishop John King Mussio elementary or junior high schools.

Race-day onsite registration begins at 8 a.m. The 5K and fall fest start at 9 a.m., and the Little Saints Sprint starts at 10:15 a.m. Fall fest activities will run until 11 a.m.

Piney Fork American Legion Post

hosting fundraiser dinner Sunday

PINEY FORK — The Piney Fork American Legion will hold a spaghetti dinner fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

The meal cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children 10 and younger. Carryouts are welcome. Proceeds from the spaghetti dinner are used to support veterans hospitals as well as funding Girls and Boys State participants.

Bethany Woman’s Club to host October Northern District Convention

BETHANY — The GFWC WV Bethany Woman’s Club opened its season Sept. 17 at Bethany Memorial Church, with Helen Moren, president, presiding.

Charlotte Chambers presented the secretary’s report.

The club is collecting articles to be sent to the Children’s Hospital in Morgantown as part of the state president’s project and will fill Christmas stockings for Boatsie’s Boxes.

Patty Travis, conservation chair, asked members to save their cereal boxes to send to Haiti, where women will use them to create jewelry.

The club will host the Northern District Convention on Oct. 20 at Bethany Memorial Church. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. The convention will be presided over by District President Dianna Durst of the Weirton Woman’s Club.

Guest speakers will be Pamela McCoy, state president, and Dana Richardson, state director of junior clubs. Moren, who is state president elect, also will speak.

Funseekers hear updates

on variety of excursion

WEIRTON — President David Krause welcomed 67 members to the Sept. 5 dinner meeting of the Funseekers, which was held at Undo’s in Weirton.

September birthdays and anniversaries were acknowledged. Krause conducted the opening ceremony.

The business meeting included reports by the secretary and treasurer and a review of tours and excursions by Krause and Regina Truax.

Trips include: Oct. 12, the Meadows; Rock and Roll Doo Wop at the Capitol Theater, Wheeling; Oct. 14-17, New York and Atlantic City; Oct. 22-26, Nashville; and Nov. 30, Motown Christmas Show with dinner at Undo’s. For information, call Krause at (740) 264-5817 or Truax at (304) 723-0419.

The October meeting will be game night; November is the annual toy drive to benefit the Table of Hope; and the December meeting is the annual holiday party.

Several fundraisers were discussed.

New Cumberland Lions Club

selling tickets for handmade quilt

NEW CUMBERLAND — The New Cumberland Lions are continuing to sell tickets for a drawing for a quilt.

The fundraiser was discussed by at the Sept. 25 meeting where President Tom Stiles presided. Pam Stiles offered the prayer, and Rick Tinsky led in opening exercises.

Russ Flanigan explained tickets for the drawing are $1 each or six for $5. The drawing will be held Nov. 13. The quilt is a handmade dark green and white interlock block pattern sized to fit a king bed. Tickets are available from any club member and also will be available at the penny auction if tickets aren’t sold out by then. The penny auction will be be held Oct. 27 at the Hancock County Senior Center. Doors open at 4 p.m., and the auction starts at 5 p.m.

The club toured another space as a possible meeting venue.

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Public Library will take part in the Big Library Read program, the world’s largest global eBook reading club through libraries and schools that connects millions of readers around the world with the same eBook at the same time.

Brooke County Library users are able to borrow Katherine Locke’s ‘The Girl with the Red Balloon,” with no waitlist or holds, through Oct. 15 by visiting http://wvreads.overdrive.com or downloading the Libby app at https://meet.libbyapp.com.

Participants will have an opportunity to discuss the book, which incorporates both fantasy and history, at https://biglibraryread.com. More than 19,000 libraries and schools around the world are participating.
