WELLSBURG — Program Chairman Linda Crabtree introduced Sharon Cuomo as the guest speaker to the regular meeting of the Wellsburg Civic League held Oct. 23 at the Brooke County Library.

Cuomo is president of the Brooke County Reading Council, an affiliate of the W.Va. Reading Association. The council is dedicated to developing and promoting literacy leadership in schools and community. Cuomo read the story “Petite Rouge: A Cajan Red Riding Hood,” by Mike Artell, a children’s book.

Janis Cross, president, presided at the meeting where Secretary Cindy Mott read a thank-you letter from Mayor Sue Simonetti for the installation of several water fountains throughout the city, a collaboration between the Civic League and several organizations and businesses. A thank-you also was read from Robin Snyder of the Wellsburg 4th of July Committee for the league’s donation made for the city-wide celebration. Irene Reitter and the projects committee were thanked for the work they have done for the fountains installed.

A thank-you was received from the Brooke County Library for an audio book, “Juror No. 3” by James Patterson, which was dedicated in memory of Mrs F.W. “Dee” Flynn, a member who died this year.

Betty Lou Harris, treasurer, gave the financial report. Various committees discussed projects for next year and will continue discussion at the next regular meeting.

A pumpkin dessert was served by hostesses Sandy Baldauf and Cheryl Soly.

The next regular meeting will be held Nov. 27 at the Wellsburg branch of the library, with guest speakers Chatman Neely and Dr. Harry Sanford of The Barn with Inn. Meetings are open, and new members are always welcome.
