Library launching Book-to-Action program
Featured book is Rich Donnelly’s ‘The Chicken Runs at Midnight’
STEUBENVILLE — Registration is under way for the Book-to-Action program being launched in December by the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County.
But participants can start reading now.
“Book-to-Action takes a book beyond discussion and puts it into action with related programs and a community service project,” explained Jennifer Cesta, the library’s public relations coordinator.
The featured book is “The Chicken Runs at Midnight” by Tom Friend that introduces readers to former Major League Baseball coach and Steubenville native Rich Donnelly, whose dying daughter’s words changed his heart for good.
All programs will be at the Schiappa branch, and registration is required for programs by calling there at (740) 264-6166.
Components of Book-to-Action are:
A book signing will be held at 6 p.m. on Dec. 3. Donnelly will discuss and sign copies of the book, which may be purchased at the library the evening of the program for $26.80 or from the Historic Fort Steuben.
A book discussion gets under way at 6 p.m. on Dec. 6. “Join us at the library to sit and discuss the book,” Cesta noted. Refreshments are included. Books are available for checkout at the Schiappa branch or for purchase from Historic Fort Steuben.
Messages from Loved Ones will be at 6 p.m. on Dec. 10. “‘The Chicken Runs at Midnight’ is a book that will strengthen your faith and remind us that God sometimes speaks through signs if we’re willing to listen,” Cesta noted. “Do you have a story of faith or have received a message from a loved one that changed your life and that you would like to share?”
Carol Borkoski, who said she has been “seeing” and talking to angels for more than 25 years, will facilitate the conversation.
Learn about cancer on Dec. 13, beginning at 4:30 p.m., when Dr. John Hyland, radiation oncologist at Trinity Health System’s Tony Teramana Cancer Center, will visit the library to discuss various types of cancer and treatment.
As a community service element of the program, visitors to any library branch can drop off a canned food item during December for the Cancer Dietary Initiative in Steubenville. The nonprofit organization is a food pantry that distributes food to local cancer patients undergoing treatment and their families. There will be a plastic container at the library for donations.
