23rd-annual performance

of ‘Messiah’ on Sunday

STEUBENVILLE — The 23rd-annual performance of Handel’s Messiah at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1443 Belleview Blvd., will be held Sunday, beginning at 3 p.m.

“The Messiah,” Handel’s most successful and best known oratorio, was composed over a period of 24 days and was first performed at a concert given for charitable purposes at Dublin, Ireland, on April 13, 1742. Through a mixture of solos, recitatives and choruses the oratorio traces, in three sections, the Life of Christ from birth to resurrection with all text taken from scripture. “We will be performing ‘Part 1, The Christmas Section,'” a spokesperson explained.

Church Women United

holds Christmas luncheon

WEIRTON — Church Women United held their annual Christmas luncheon on Dec. 7 at Cove United Presbyterian Church with 36 attending, including Nancy Brown, guest. Hostesses were women from Cove United Presbyterian.

Cathy Cooper, outgoing president, thanked the women for coming and for their help she has received during the past two years. The Rev. James Rudiger gave the blessing for the food and shared how to “Radiate Beauty.”

Red shawls made by Darlene Johnson were presented to Cooper and Joyce Summers. President Rebecca “Tish” Turner presented gifts to Cooper and Maggie Clark, outgoing recording secretary.

Turner announced the schedule of Church Women United board meetings. They include: Shiloh Apostolic Faith Assembly Church, Feb. 5; Oakland Presbyterian Church, April 5; St. Peter A.M.E. Church and St. Thomas Episcopal, Sept. 6; St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Oct. 4; and First Baptist Church, Dec. 6.

Turner gave the devotions, “Remember the Greatest Gift Ever.” There was group singing, and Cooper presented everyone with a gift.

Community candlelight service

Wednesday in Richmond

RICHMOND — The second-annual community outdoor candlelight service will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the gazebo beside the Richmond United Methodist Church, 112 S. Sugar St. It will be a brief outdoor service.

The Richmond UMC, meanwhile, will hold two Christmas Eve candlelight services on Dec. 24, the first at 6 p.m., the second at 8:30 p.m.

Philoptochos Society

holds Christmas party

STEUBENVILLE — The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Philoptochos Society held its Christmas party on Dec. 6 at the church with the president presiding. There were 16 women attending.

The festivities included a lenten buffet prepared by Nick Tsouris of Maryland Market.

The Rev. Nicholas Halkias gave the opening prayer and blessing for the food.

Among those attending were the daughters and daughter-in-law of the late Vi Buffone, who was active in the Philoptochos Society. They were daughters Anna Marie Sadler and Louise Lloyd and daughter-in-law Llelia Buffone. “Every Christmas we play Vi Buffone’s number game, which is always enjoyed by all,” a spokeswoman explained. The group also sang Christmas songs.

The next meeting will be held Jan. 3.

‘Longest Night Service’

scheduled for Friday

WHEELING — Vance Memorial, Rock Hill, First United and Bellaire Presbyterian Churches invite the public to a “Longest Night Service” to be held Friday beginning at 6 p.m. at Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church, 905 National Road.

There will be different soups to enjoy before the service.

“This informal service will be a specially designed time for those experiencing grief, loss and loneliness during the holiday season,” a spokesperson noted.

Attire is casual. In the parking lot behind Vance, enter the doors under the big green awning and follow the signs. For information, contact Jane Schockey at (304) 232-0980.

Follansbee First welcomes

Pastor Larry Barkley

FOLLANSBEE — The ministry of Pastor Larry Barkley and his wife, Jane, has begun at the Follansbee First Church of the Nazarene.

Barkley and his wife reside in Weirton where he served as the pastoral care and senior adult ministries pastor at the Weirton First Church of the Nazarene. Previous to that, he was lead pastor at the Fairmont First Church of the Nazarene.

The Barkleys have two children, daughter Amy, who lives in Waynesburg, Pa., with her husband, John, and three sons, Jack, James and Joseph. Their son Chad and his wife, Karla, live in Strasburg, Va., and are expecting their first child.

The Follansbee First Church of the Nazarene is located at 144 Mahan Lane. Services are at 10:45 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday and at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday

A special Christmas concert featuring Brent Kimble will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday. A candlelight service will be held at 6 p.m. on Dec. 23.

Jonathan White to perform

at Weirton Alliance Church

WEIRTON — Jonathan White will perform in concert during the morning worship service at the Weirton Alliance Church on Dec. 23, beginning at 10:45 a.m.

White has had the opportunity to sing for many different kinds of audiences, including the Grand Ole Opry and the Bill Gaither Homecoming concert series. The concert is free and open to the public.

Christmas concert Sunday

at Follansbee First Church

FOLLANSBEE — Gospel singer Brent Kimble will perform a Christmas concert Sunday evening, at the Follansbee First Church of the Nazarene, 144 Mahan Lane. The concert is free and open to the public and begins at 6 p.m.

Finley United Methodist

hosting cantata Sunday

STEUBENVILLE — Finley United Methodist Church, located at 958 Lincoln Ave., will present the cantata “The Worship of Christmas — Celebrate the Miracle” on Sunday, beginning at 6:30 pm.

“The cantata is full of passionate, worshipful music that will provide the meaningful moments you need to create your Christmas celebration this year,” a spokesperson noted.

Colliers UMC hosting

Christmas cantata Sunday

COLLIERS — Members of the Colliers United Methodist Church choir will present their 2018 Christmas cantata,“Mary Did You Know,” on Sunday, beginning at 6 p.m.

There will be refreshments and a visit from Santa Claus immediately following. The church is located at 318 Pennsylvania Ave. (Harmon Creek Road) directly across from the Colliers post office.

The church also will hold a Christmas Eve candlelight service at 7 p.m. on Dec. 24. Brett Cain will share special music during the service.
