STEUBENVILLE — Wreaths Across America will host its first wreath-laying ceremony at Union Cemetery, 1720 Sunset Blvd., on Saturday, beginning at noon, and invites the public to attend and participate.
Wreaths Across America is a recognized worldwide nonprofit organization from Columbia Falls, Maine.
It is represented in more than 1,400 cemeteries across the United States. Its origin first began in Arlington Cemetery in 1992 by Morrill Worcester.
Presently there are more than 2,500 veterans buried in Union Cemetery.
“Our goal this year is 700 wreaths to ensure that veterans’ graves in the veterans section are covered,” noted Wendy C. Barr, location coordinator. Each wreath costs $15.
“Our hope is that we will someday provide a wreath for every veteran in Union Cemetery,” she added.
Volunteers are needed to help unpackage wreaths in rows along the pathways. “We are laying wreaths after the ceremony concludes,” she noted.
