YWCA of Steubenville planning ‘Love of Wine’ fundraiser Feb. 9

STEUBENVILLE — The YWCA of Steubenville, located at 320 N. Fourth St., will host a wine tasting next month with a three-fold purpose — have fun, raise funds and promote the 105-year-old organization.

“The Love of Wine” wine tasting will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Feb. 9 at the YWCA, according to Sophie Spencer, its executive director.

“Join us to try a variety of wines along with fruit, cheeses and chocolate,” Spencer said.

Wines available will be ones made and donated by the local Tri-State Winemakers Club.

Those attending must be 21 years old. Tickets are $15 each and are available in advance or at the door.

The fundraiser also will include a 50-50 drawing and a Chinese auction, noted Karissa Merckle, fundraising chair.

Donations of Chinese auction items are being accepted and can be dropped off at the YWCA or call (740) 282-1261.

The YWCA of Steubenville “is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all,” according to its mission statement.

Services provided include a residence that shelters and helps women in transition; a Y Teen program involving Steubenville High School girls; monthly card parties; and a support group called Parenting the Second Time Around, which is geared to grandparents raising grandchildren.

That group’s next meeting at the YWCA will be held Jan. 23, beginning at 10 a.m.

The YWCA also hosts weekly meetings of the Steubenville Kiwanis Club and Steubenville Rotary Club and offers several exercises classes as well.

That includes yoga at 9 a.m. on Mondays; Tai Chi at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesday; and Tai Chi chair-based classes on Wednesdays, beginning at 9 a.m.

Its monthly “Taking the Lead” series features seminars for women entrepreneurs, women in senior management or women who want to start or are starting a business.The next one is set for Feb. 6.

In addition to fundraisers, the YWCA also relies on membership dues and welcomes returning and new members. Annual membership levels include active, $30; sustaining, $40; friend, $50; angel, $75; corporate, $150; and donation of any other amount.
