CARROLLTON — The Alpha Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma held its spring meeting at Ponderosa in Carrollton, which included the induction of new members and a program by Trang Moreland, author of “Just Smile and Say Hello.”

President Barbara Pritts welcomed Moreland and new members Sally George and Belinda Mach. She read a quote after which Darlene Mason gave the blessing before the meeting got under way.

Donna Iachini conducted the induction that involved the new members and their sponsors, Rose Seck and Donna McCasland. Iachini read a description of the symbolism on the DKG flag. Flag bearers were Linda Holub and Julia Workman. She and her team of member volunteers — Jane Brower, Cynthia Harrah, Carolyn Kibble, Darlene Mason, Diane McElwain, Pritts, Darlene Smith, Carole Thorne, Marlene Wolf and Julia Workman — read the scripted ceremony, including the purposes of DKG and duties of its members.

Seck, educational excellence committee chair, introduced the guest speaker whose book describes the differences in the educational systems of Vietnam and the United States. There is no government assistance, for example, and the Vietnamese are able to attend school only if they pay for it.

Moreland’s book also describes the conditions of her upbringing there until at 21 she immigrated to New York as part of an arranged marriage. She faced language and cultural obstacles but with determination achieved her dream of becoming a successful businesswoman.

Thirty-five members attended the April 13 meeting where Pritts gave a report on the state convention held in Polaris, Ohio, that she and Nancy Shuster attended. They transported a framed poster representing the chapter as part of a display created by Gina Judy and requested from each chapter.

Other business included the announcement that Darlene Mason is retiring. Other reports were given by Ann Wiley, Mary Barnes, Gina Judy, Darlene Smith, Nancy Shuster, Carole Thorne, Darlene Mason, Joyce Ferguson, Diane McElwain, Julie Blanton, Sally George, Marlene Wolf and Belinda Mach.

Carolyn Kibble was in charge of the drawing for gift baskets, which were won by Gina Judy and Linda Holub.
