Civil War Symposium set

for Saturday in Wheeling

WHEELING — The Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable will hold its annual Civil War Symposium on Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m. inside Wheeling’s Independence Hall, located at 1523 Market St.

It is free and open to the public.

The symposium will be dedicated to the memory of John Mattox, co-founder and curator of the Underground Railroad Museum in Flushing. Mattox, a past presenter at the symposium, died July 17 at the age of 84.

The symposium’s first speaker will be Rea Redd, a professor of history and director of Eberly Library at Waynesburg University. The author and battlefield guide will discuss the testing and stages involved to become a battlefield guide and a guide’s points of views about Gettysburg, Antietam and Harpers Ferry.

Redd earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in English and history from Waynesburg and Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in library science from University of Pittsburgh. His publications include “The Gettysburg Campaign Vol. I and II” and “Gettysburg Churches Become Battlefield Hospitals.”

A 45-minute break for lunch and an opportunity to tour Independence Hall will follow Redd’s presentation.

At 12:15 p.m., retired Judge Harry White will discuss the presidential powers and role of the Supreme Court in time of war.

White serves as mediator of Belmont County, Common Pleas Court. His publications include numerous judicial opinions (11 republished by the Ohio Supreme Court) on various civil and criminal issues for more than 34 years.

Following White’s presentation will be Scott Mingus of Harrisburg, Pa., an author whose lecture will focus on the role of West Virginia troops at the second Battle of Winchester during the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. Mingus has written 21 Civil War books and received the Dr. James Robertson Jr. Literary Prize. He also has written articles for Gettysburg Magazine and maintains a blog on the Civil War History of York County, Pa. His great-great grandfather served as a 25-year-old drummer boy in the 51st Ohio Infantry.

The symposium, which is scheduled to end at 2:30 p.m., is supported by Debbie Jones, curator of Independence Hall; the Wheeling 250 Committee; Friends of Wheeling; Wheeling Heritage Foundation; and the West Virginia Humanities Council. Questions can be directed to Roger Micker at (301) 312-7559.
