DAR chapter holds opening meeting

STEUBENVILLE — The Fort Steuben Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held its Sept. 14 opening meeting at Historic Fort Steuben with Regent Vickie Joseph presiding.

The invocation and benediction were given by Chaplain Nancy Courtney. Opening ceremonies also involved Flag Chairman Barbara Starkey; Mary Ann Jesse, second vice regent; and Bonnie Slemmer.

Joseph introduced the officers and committee chairs and read the president general’s message.

Courtney inducted Francine Hauldren as first vice regent.

The “Indian Minute” was presented by Carolyn Mizok.

Hauldren introduced the meeting’s speaker, Secretary Janet Rymer, the OSDAR 2018 Women’s Issues essay contest winner who presented a workshop on writing an essay to encourage members to enter this year’s contest. She read her winning essay titled, “The Lightning Strike of Pre-Eclampsia.”

Under committee reports, Sue Davidson, conservation, reported on the Skip the Straw plan, the pollinator garden and From Sea to Shining Sea river sweep or lake cleaning projects; DeeAnn Greene reported on her work building the web page; Jeanne Vega, service for veterans, told about the “Stars for our Troops” project; and Karen Blanc, national defense, reported on important dates in September, including the Gold Star Mothers’ ceremony on Sept. 29.

It was announced under chapter achievement awards that the chapter received Constitution Week, Leadership Award, Community; Chapter Achievement Award, Level 2; and DAR Good Citizens Committee, Contact 10 or more schools.

Reports included, Continental Congress, Nancy Valles regarding the trip to Washington, D.C., and President General Project Chairman Tammy Kotyk reported on the fall fun fair.

Under women’s issues, Greene reported on the quilt drawing and offered suggestions for the Breast Cancer Awareness project for October, such as soft pillows, prayer shawls, caps and dry-mouth drops.

Prospective members present were Griselda Taylor and Melinda Young. Giovanni’s Restaurant on Pennsylvania Avenue, Weirton, will be the new meeting location. The next one is Oct. 12.
