The Ladies Philoptochos Executive Board of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Weirton took the oath of office administered by the Rev. Frank Milanese, parish priest, following church services on Sept. 1. From left are Pearl Tranto, vice president; Darlene Ballas, president; Milanese; Joyce Drane, secretary; and Alexandra Melonas, treasurer. “Philoptochos, which literally means ‘friends of the poor,’ has provided thousands of dollars each year in support of local charitable, social and religious organizations in their pursuit of philanthropy and lending a helping a hand in our community,” a spokesperson explained. “Philoptochos is famous citywide for its main fundraiser, the Easter bake sale featuring Greek twist cookies (koulourakia) and braided Easter bread (Tsoureki). More than 700 dozen cookies and 350 loaves of bread are sold out each year at this yearly event.” Multiple organizations have been selected as recipients of this year’s fundraising efforts, which will be announced next quarter in time for the fall and holiday season. The next scheduled meeting is Oct. 6 immediately following church services. For information about Philoptochos, contact Melonas at (304) 797-9884 at the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church office.
