National Action Network president receives award

STEUBENVILLE — Carol Ann Simmons, president of the Steubenville Chapter of the National Action Network, was honored at the Ohio Midwest Region Conference held Sept. 27-29 in Beechwood, Ohio, where she was presented with the Behind the Scenes Humanitarian Ohio Champion for Justice Award.

The conference addressed voter empowerment, criminal justice, city government and structure and women empowerment. It attracted the attendance of several hundred participants, including state and federal guests.

The National Action Network is a civil rights organization founded by the Rev. Al Sharpton, president. Chairman of the board is the Rev. W. Franklin Richardson. The organization was created in the spirit of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., according to Simmons.

The Steubenville chapter, headed by Simmons, and Beverly Kelley, vice president, advocates civil rights for all, Simmons explained. For information, call (740) 264-2361.
