Candids from special veterans event in Toronto

World War II veterans, from left, Henry Barto, John Skrabak, Ellsworth Graham and Anka Buratynski, widow of veteran Raymond Buratynski -- Contributed

Photos on today’s community page were submitted by George Komar, president of the Toronto Coalition for Revitalization, and are from Nov. 9 when the Toronto American Legion Post 86 joined with the coalition and city to host a dinner in celebration of veterans and the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the nation’s first World War I memorial.

That monument is in Toronto, at the corner of Third and Market streets and is included in the National Register of Historic Places. The monument was dedicated on Nov. 11, 1919, one year after the end of World War I. Commissioned by the Toronto War Board, it is cast in bronze, weighs 5 tons and was sculpted by Guiesseppe Moretti, who completed his work in just six months.

The photos are from the free dinner for veterans that was held that evening at the Legion post and attended by close to 200. It came on the heels of a parade held earlier in the day, which included special speakers and a flyover by a restored B-25 Mitchell from Champaign Aviation Museum at Grimes Field in Urbana.
