Series topic to be ‘The Role of Mental Illness in Addiction’
The series begins Thursday and is a virtual education and outreach workshop from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. designed to increase community awareness of opiate use disorder prevention and resources.
The Zoom link will be posted on the Sycamore Youth Center Facebook page and the websites www.ovyn.org and www.sycamorecenter.com.
There will be a question-and-answer period at the end of the talks.
The presenters in the first series will be Robin Leasure, director of nursing and advocate for treatment for individuals with mental illness and substance abuse disorders at New Days Recovery Center in Rogers; Becca Schaming, assistant director at the Sycamore Youth Center and intervention specialist for the Buckeye Local School District, English language learning teacher for VIP Kid; and Mary Kushner, case manager for Healthways in Weirton.
Funding for the event is from the state of Ohio’s Faith Based Initiatives Office and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
The series has a special emphasis on reaching people within the faith-based community, according to Bobbyjon Bauman, OVYN director.
The lineup also will include these 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. sessions:
• Aug. 11: “Opioid Use Disorder in the Ohio Valley” by Pastors Sam and Chrissy Williams of Christ the King Church, Weirton, and founders and directors of Life Support for Adults and Teens.
• Aug. 27: “COVID-19: How to Respond to the Current Health Crisis” by Dr. Paul Macdonald, pediatrician of Family Medical Care Community Health Center.
• Sept. 23: “Stopping Addiction Before it Starts: Effective Prevention Strategies,” by Joe Rawson, prevention education coordinator from the Jefferson County Family Recovery Center.
Golf tournament to benefit
Cancer Dietary Initiative
EAST SPRINGFIELD — A golf tournament to benefit the Cancer Dietary Initiative will be held on Monday at Spring Hills Golf Club, state Route 43, East Springfield.
Registration is at 8:15 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. The cost is $45 per player with $20 for team mulligans. There will be dinner and prizes at the conclusion.

STEUBENVILLE — The Pleasant Hill Fire Department Auxiliary will host a “Taco Tuesday”on Tuesday.
It will be held from 11 a.m. to sell-out. Menu items include: Tacos, $3; taco in a bag, $2; taco salad, $5; refried beans, $1; nachos, $3; and nachos supreme, $5.
