Albert Bickerstaff to mark

his 100th birthday Thursday

STEUBENVILLE — Albert Bickerstaff of Steubenville will be celebrating his 100th birthday on Thursday.

He was born on Aug. 6, 1920, in Steubenville, the eldest of five children of Albert and Augusta Oberg Bickerstaff. His siblings — Mary Margaret, Clara Louise, William and Dale — are all deceased.

Bickerstaff retired from Weirton Steel after working on the railroad for 35 years. An Army Air Force veteran of World War II, he served as a navigation instructor for the 829.

He and his wife, the former Isabell Haines, were married for 60 years before her death in 2006.

His children include daughters Betty Deitch and Mary Lou Bickerstaff, both of Steubenville, and stepson Scott Lewis, also of Steubenville. Son David Bickerstaff is deceased. The family includes many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A family celebration is planned.

Fundraiser dinner Thursday

at East Springfield Center

EAST SPRINGFIELD — The East Springfield Community Center will host a fundraiser dinner from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The meal is a baked steak dinner with mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, bread, dessert and drink. The cost is $9. Patrons can dine in with social distancing observed or get takeout orders. The phone number is (740) 543-3700.

The center is located on county Road 39 next to the East Springfield Volunteer Fire Department.

Sugar Grove UMC to host

yard sale, bake sale Saturday

TORONTO — Sugar Grove United Methodist Church, located at 159 county Road 68, Toronto, will be hosting an outdoor yard sale and bake sale fundraiser. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Food will be available. Patrons are to wear a mask.

STEUBENVILLE — The Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary is planning a community yard sale for Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Annual Hopedale community yard sale set for two days

HOPEDALE — The 21st-annual Hopedale community yard sale will be held over a two-day period this week. It is scheduled for Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. Anyone participating in the sale is encouraged to contact the city building to be placed on the maps, which will be made available at various family yard sale locations.

Weirton Legion selling tickets

for minibike drawing Oct. 31

WEIRTON — A fundraiser to benefit the Weirton American Legion Post 10 involves selling tickets for a drawing for a 2019 Coleman CT200U-EX minibike.

Tickets are $10 and available at the Legion post at 3140 Pennsylvania Ave.

The drawing will be held at 6 p.m. on Oct. 31, and the winner need not be present.

The minibike is described “as a rugged, durable, off-road minibike that is built for adventure on the trail or around the farm.”

Scholarships awarded

by Scottish Rite

STEUBENVILLE ­– The Scottish Rite Masons of the Valley of Steubenville have announced the 2020 Valley Scholars. This year the organization presented $6,000 in scholarship money and framed scholarship certificates to seven deserving young students.

Scottish Rite Masons are a premier organization within the Masonic fraternity. They emphasize fraternal relations and philosophy within Freemasonry. The 109 geographical units of the Northern Jurisdiction of Scottish Rite encompass 360,000 members in a 15-state region. The Valley of Steubenville stretches from Lisbon to Shadyside and has nearly 1,000 members.

The total list of scholars and their school of attendance includes:

• Abbott Scholarships ($1,000): Michael B. Blackburn, Youngstown State University; Elisabeth A. Carpico, Muskingum University; Karli A. Celestin, West Virginia University; Tyler M. Felmet, Auburn University; and Angelo N. Madden, University of Akron.

• Valley of Steubenville Scholarships ($500): Kasi Gillespie, Wheeling University; and Sefton Houlette, Youngstown State University.

Saline trustees to meet

HAMMONDSVILLE — The Saline township Trustees will hold a special meeting at 9 a.m. Thursday.

The meeting will be held at the township office, 164 county Road 50, Hammondsville.

Wintersville council to meet

WINTERSVILLE — Wintersville Council’s finance committee will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at the village office at 200 Grove St.

It will be followed by council’s regular meeting at 7 p.m.
