‘Response to Health Crisis’ topic of Thursday presentation

STEUBENVILLE — The Ohio Valley Youth Network, in partnership with the Jefferson County Family Recovery Center, will continue its four-part Zoom/Facebook live talk Thursday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

It will feature Dr. Paul Macdonald, pediatrician with Family Medical Care Community Center, addressing the topic “COVID-19: How to Respond to the Current Health Crisis.”

Macdonald will highlight the effect of COVID on the addicted as well as those in the faith community. “It will be an informative and timely discussion for everyone,” noted Bobbyjon Bauman, OVYN director.

There will be a question-and-answer period at the end of the talk.

The Zoom link will be posted on the Sycamore Youth Center Facebook page and the websites www.ovyn.org and www.sycamorecenter.com.

The series is designed to increase community awareness of opiate use disorder prevention and resources. Funding for the event is from the state of Ohio’s Faith Based Initiatives Office and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

The lineup will wrap up on Sept. 23 with the topic “Stopping Addiction Before it Starts: Effective Prevention Strategies,” presented by Joe Rawson, prevention education coordinator from the Jefferson County Family Recovery Center.

AARP seeking volunteers

for Tax Aide program

FOLLANSBEE — The AARP Foundation is seeking volunteers to serve in its Tax Aide program for the next tax season.

AARP will train them to provide tax assistance to low- and moderate-income citizens in a variety of roles. Last year, AARP volunteers helped more than 13,000 people file their federal and state tax returns, helping them to claim more than $200 million in earned income tax credits and $1.4 million in income tax refunds, the organization reported.

The aid is available to people of all ages.

Outdoor breakfast Saturday

to benefit community center

UNIONPORT — Wayne Township Community Center in Unionport will host an outdoor breakfast with all proceeds to benefit the community center.

It will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

The menu includes pancakes and sausage, sausage gravy and biscuits, scrambled eggs and drinks.

Cost is by donation. Social distancing and all precautions will be observed, a spokesperson noted.

Follansbee Legion Post to don purple in show of support

FOLLANSBEE — Members of Follansbee American Legion Post 45 and its auxiliary will be donning purple on Saturday to recognize the sacrifices of children in military families and collecting donations for the national American Legion’s Child Welfare Foundation.

Established in 1955, the foundation has raised more than $17 million for causes benefiting children.

Part of the American Legion’s Purple Up! for Military Kids campaign, the Follansbee post’s effort had been planned for April, Month of the Military Child, but was postponed because of the pandemic.
