StoryWalk program, activities
STEUBENVILLE — Families can read a new book outdoors for the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County’s StoryWalk program at Beatty Park in Steubenville, beginning July 16 and continuing through Aug. 13.
Visit the park to read the book “The Hike” by Alison Farrell. Permanent, in-ground signs hold the pages of the book and can be found up the hill in the new pool field. When families are done reading the book together, they can visit the Main Library for a special adventure surprise.
On Tuesday at 11 a.m. children can watch the library’s virtual bingo game on the YouTube channel, PLSJ, to find out if they’re a winner. This virtual bingo game is part of the library system’s Throwback Summer Reading Challenge.

Information about “Insects of the Home and Garden” will be on display Monday through July 16. Learn how to identify insects such as pollinators, garden pests and even home invaders such as termites and bed bugs. An assortment of insect identification cards will be available. Children: “Backyard Adventures” is Monday at 11 a.m. This is a program for children and adults who enjoy being outdoors. “Your backyard is a wonderful place to have an adventure,” noted Jennifer Cesta, the library’s public relations coordinator. “Learn what is going on just outside your door with Daniel Caron. Discover how to attract all kinds of visitors to your yard. And find surprises when you notice little things outside that many people miss.”
A scavenger hunt is set for Wednesday through July 16. Stop in anytime from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. to participate. Successful completion of the scavenger hunt will enter participants in a special prize drawing.

Summer open house planned Sunday at Richmond museum
RICHMOND — The Richmond Community Historical Society continues its summer open houses at the Crew House Museum at 34 W. Main St.
Hosted by the historical society, it will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.
The summer open houses are held from noon to 4 p.m. on the second and fourth Sunday. Remaining open house dates are July 25 and Aug. 8 and 22.
The museum welcomes visitors, including JUHS reunion groups, who can arrange a tour of the popular JUHS memorabilia rooms on the museum’s second floor, by contacting Phil Judy, society president, at (740) 765-4534.
Anyone interested in local history is welcome to attend meetings or join the historical society. Annual dues are $5.
The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on July 20 at a location to be announced.
One-man folk band Ben-David Warner at Sycamore tonight
STEUBENVILLE — One-man-folk-band Ben-David Warner will be playing the Sy’s Cafe summer concert series today at 6:30 p.m. at the Sycamore Youth Center, located at 301 N. Fourth St.
“This unique and intimate show will feature all original music — a rare occurrence — so don’t miss it,”
noted Bobbyjon Bauman, center director. Drinks and treats will be available for purchase. The event is free to attend with donations accepted and appreciated, according to Bauman.
Warner, a multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter, lives with one foot in the choral music world and one in the folk music world. A former member of Scythian, he is a student of choral conducting at Catholic University of America as well as a touring folk musician offering his blend of Irish Americana.
Trained on the classical violin, Warner plays guitar, banjo, fiddle and just about anything with strings that he can get his hands on. Ed Helms’s The Bluegrass Situation praises his “Built These Walls” as a “blue-collar ballad we can all get behind.” He recorded his debut solo album, “Red Rockin’ Chair,” in 2015.

WELLSBURG — Kim Harless of the Brooke County Public Library will present an outdoor story hour at 5 p.m.Wednesday and July 28, weather permitting.
