Shoe application deadline extended

-- Janice Kiaski

The deadline for submitting applications for the annual United Sole Lace Up for Kids initiative by the United Way of Jefferson County has been extended until Saturday, according to Laura Rauch, United Way executive director, right, and Tami Cashioli, finance director, who stand near approximately 200 of the anticipated 500 pairs of shoes that will be distributed. The shoes are for boys and girls, birth to age 18 or senior in high school who are residents of Jefferson and Harrison counties and who qualify for a free or reduced lunch. The applications, which must be completed by a parent or guardian, are available at the United Way’s website at unitedway@unitedway-jc.org or the United Way office at 511 N. Fourth St., Steubenville. The office is where the distribution will be conducted on Aug. 19 and 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For information, call the office at (740) 284-9000. The distribution is one that involves sponsors and individual donors, including the Esther Simmons Charitable Trust; Cardinal Operating Co.; Wendy’s; the UPS Super Store in Steubenville, which donated 200 some books for children 5 and older; and Shoe Sensation, which donated 100 pairs of socks. The grants make possible the purchase of the shoes and socks with this year translating into 3,000 pairs of socks. Each child will not only receive a pair of new shoes but five pairs of socks. “We are extending the deadline to accommodate more people who may not have been aware of it,” Rauch said. Help Me Grow partners with the United Way to help with the application process as does Job and Family Services. “We have applications out at multiple locations in the county,” Cashioli said. “We thank Wendy’s contribution annually and the Cardinal Operating Co. not only contributes sponsorship for it but also comes and helps us with the shoe distribution. Their staff is always really great,” Cashioli said. “We’re really happy we’re able to help out the kids in the community in need,” Rauch added.
