Brooke Hill Playhouse offering acting classes for primary

and middle school students

WELLSBURG — Brooke Hills Playhouse is offering acting classes for primary and middle school students.

The one-hour classes will run on eight consecutive Saturdays beginning Oct. 2 and ending Nov. 20.

The goal is to help students develop confidence in stage skills by focusing on emotions, voice, movement, costume and performance.

Two classes are being offered — primary for grades K-4 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., and middle school for grades 5-8 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Classes are $75 in advance or $10 per lesson.

Course instructor Diana Mendel explained, “We have so many talented children who perform in our children’s shows every season who have asked for classes to enrich and expand their knowledge of the stage and how to perform better. We are thrilled to offer these classes and have many fun-filled Saturdays to share. We hope to also offer these courses in the spring.”

‘Fort Steuben by Candlelight’

happening Oct. 2 and Oct. 9

STEUBENVILLE — Historic Fort Steuben is offering a unique evening tour at the fort at 120 S. Third St., Steubenville, on Oct. 2 and Oct. 9 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

“Fort Steuben by Candlelight” allows visitors to experience life for the soldiers and settlers during the dark nights on the frontier.

“In the fall of 1786 at Fort Steuben, there was nothing beyond the stockade but dark wilderness,” explained Executive Director Paul Zuros. “The soldiers and surveyors had only the light of their fires and lanterns in which to keep watch.”

As the sun sets, an open house will be held at Historic Fort Steuben where visitors can visit after dark for some afterhours history. Participants will learn about the fort, its role in the settling and surveying of the Northwest Territory and what life was like on the Ohio frontier in the late 18th century.

The buildings in the fort will be open with guides stationed in each one to interact with visitors and share some history.

After touring the fort, visitors can sit by the campfire to listen to stories and enjoy some refreshments.

Cost for “Fort Steuben by Candlelight” is $10 per person and $5 for children age 12 and under.

Toronto Seniors welcome new member, plan trips

TORONTO — The Toronto Sunrise Seniors welcomed new member Shirley Wilson to the Sept. 10 meeting held at Karaffa Recreation Center.

President Barbara Pritts welcomed the members and opened with a prayer for the meal. She thanked kitchen committee members Jay Smith, Beth Clark, Kenny Mossor, Joyce Gribben and Joe and Sandi Radvansky.

Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence in memory of all of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Vice President Gloria Howard conducted the roll call of officers and read the minutes. Treasurer Judy Sabol gave a detailed financial report which was filed for audit.

September birthdays and anniversaries were announced. A moment of silence was held in memory of John Lash, a longtime member who enjoyed being the caller for bingo games.

Pritts reported that the bus for the Hartville trip will leave the stadium parking lot at 8 a.m. Sept. 30. Masks are required on the bus. There is a trip to the Golden Corral Restaurant and Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens to see the winter flower and light show on Dec. 2. Club dues will be collected in October.

Alex Anderson was recognized as “Member of the Month.” His advice to others was “Nothing is free. You’ve got to work for what you want.” Members thanked him for the vegetables that he shares from his garden.

The 50-50 drawing was won by Carol Rogers, and Phyllis Smith and Don Pritts was thanked for selling the tickets. Members played bingo after the meeting. Winners were Ruth White, Phyllis Smith, Lucy Timko, Bob Deku, Shirley Wilson, Gloria Howard, Paul Sherwood, Beth Clark and Louie Nelson. The group thanked Judy Sabol, who sold the cards, and Joe Radvansky who called the numbers.

The next meeting is Friday at the Karaffa Recreation Center. All seniors are welcome to attend.
