WEIRTON — The Weirton Lions Club celebrated its 85th year of service to the Weirton area during an anniversary dinner held recently at Giovanni’s Restaurant

Current District Gov. Ramona Sago was the featured speaker at the dinner that includes Lions from Morgantown, Western Mon Area, Williamstown and Wheeling Island joining in the celebration.

Weirton Lions are service-minded Weirton residents whose focus through the years has been assisting with vision and hearing problems and providing education regarding diabetes, environment, childhood cancer and hunger, a club spokesperson explained.

The Lions have worked with the Brooke/Hancock Family Resource Network for children and family concerns; Weirton Christian Center providing dictionaries for students and participating in its community garden; the Friendship Room in Steubenville through donations and by making sandwiches for those in need.

“The Lions have donated money, their time and talents to many service projects in the area during those 85 years,” the spokesperson added.

The club started a new project this year honoring local military veterans with the American Legion Post 10 — creating a flag display at the war memorial near Wal-Mart in Weirton. Ninety sponsored flags flew at that site in this first year of the project. The last display in 2021 will be for Veterans Day.

Lion Jim Courtney recently was named “Lion of the Year” for 2021-22 in honor of his outstanding work with the club in service projects and fundraising.

The club is planning holiday projects, including donations to the Weirton Ministerial Association for the community Thanksgiving dinner and canned good collections for the Community Bread Basket and Salvation Army.

The club continues to welcome new members to lend a hand in its varied activities. For information, contact President Gary Pitcock at gary.pitcock1@comcast.net or (304) 797-8374.

Weirton Lions meet at Giovanni’s Restaurant, 3013 Pennsylvania Ave., Weirton, on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 6:30 p.m.
