Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church will be offering free Christmas Day carry-out meal
STEUBENVILLE — Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church will be holding its 11th-annual Christmas Day Memorial Dinner on Dec. 25 at Hellenic Hall, located at 300 S. Fourth St., Steubenville.
“This year dinner will be served in the Hellenic Hall in a carry-out fashion to keep our volunteers and patrons safe due to COVID-19,” a spokesman explained.
The dinner is free of charge, and everyone is welcome. Participants should call (740) 282-9835 to reserve a meal and to stop in between 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. to pick it up.
“Holy Trinity is blessed and enriched in God’s love throughout the year,” commented Spiro Alexander of Holy Trinity.
“Last year, due to COVID, we were saddened that we were not able to serve meals. However, due to generous donations, we were able to provide meals with a donation to the Friendship Room,” he noted.
“We know that there is a need. This year, we will do our best to provide a home-cooked meal and fellowship in a carry-out fashion. Our door will be open, and all are welcome for whatever reason to come in and pick up a meal,” Alexander added.
The menu for the day will be a traditional Christmas Day meal consisting of turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, cranberry sauce, roll and butter and desert.
Christmas concert to benefit Toronto Salvation Army
TORONTO — Riverview United Methodist Church, located at 105 N. River Ave., Toronto, will be hosting an ecumenical Christmas concert on Sunday beginning at 4 p.m.
Performers include choirs from St. Joseph and St. Francis Church, the First United Methodist Church, the Presbyterian Church, the Bible Methodist Church and Crossroads Christian Church.
Tammy Spicer, Paul Rebres, Blest (the Brookes Sisters) and Friends will perform as well.
A love offering will benefit the Toronto Unit of the Salvation Army, which has assisted 138 families within the past year with utility bills, gasoline or medicine.
Since there has not been a red kettle campaign in Toronto this year, the concert will be a major fundraiser for it. All are welcome to attend, and unvaccinated individuals are encouraged to wear masks.
Christmas games, gifts part of Toronto Sunrise Seniors event
TORONTO — The Toronto Sunrise Seniors met in the commons area of the Karaffa Recreation Center on Dec. 10 to celebrate Christmas. President Barbara Pritts welcomed guests, including Mayor Rick Parker and his wife, Tracey; Don and Cheryl Clarke; Jeff Foster; Lou Simone; Jill Smith; and Shirley Rebich.
The December kitchen committee representatives Ruth White, Lucy Timko, Phyllis Smith, Marion Wilson and Caroline McCart decorated the tables with white tablecloths, poinsettia place mats and matching napkins with lighted wreaths with snowmen as the center piece. Individual favors were wooden snowmen crafted by Secretary Laura Sheets.
Pritts gave the blessing for the meal by reading a poem entitled “Love Came Down at Christmas.” The meal was catered by Connie’s Corner from Chester.
Following the meal, kitchen committee assignments for 2022 were distributed along with lists of active members. The January kitchen committee will be Nancy Bodrog, Paul Sherwood, Louie Nelson, Phyllis Smith and Marion Wilson.
Two members were remembered under the health report. Participants then played a Christmas card game. Each member picked a card but was asked not to open it. Then, following directions included in a story of Jesus’ birth, members passed their cards to the right or left, ending up with a much different card than the one originally selected.
“They were delighted when they finally opened their card to find gift cards to local restaurants and stores,” a club spokesperson noted
Attendees participated in Christmas trivia to earn additional gift cards. Table center pieces and boxes of chocolates were won by Cathy Samuel, Don Clarke, Beverly Anderson, Mary Edwards, Helen Bayne, Ruth White, Bonnie Wilson, Don Pritts, Sandi Radvansky, Paul Sherwood, Shirley Rebich, Rex Mossor, Debbie Luvisi, Helen Lindsay and Darlene Naukam. Bill Edwards and Gloria Howard won the 50-50 drawing. Paul Zink won a decoration crafted by Tracey Parker. The evening concluded with bingo.
The next meeting will be held Jan. 14. Any senior citizen is welcome to attend.
