Youth plays in national chess tourney

David Reame, right, a member of the Fellowship of the Pawns Chess Club, competed May 13-15 in the 2022 National Elementary (grades kindergarten through six) Chess Championship held in Columbus. Reame played in the Unrated Section and earned an eighth-place trophy in that section. In seven games, he competed againt children from Georgia, Virginia, New Mexico, California, Indiana, New York and Texas. In between his games, he was coached by Gary Rawson, founder and director of the Fellowship of the Pawns Chess Club, which is a community club that meets at First Westminster Presbyterian Church, 235 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. All youth in the community who are interested in learning or playing chess are welcome to attend.
