Reigning champion Steubenville High School Band was the winner of the 2022 Battle of the Bands against Steubenville Catholic Central High School, which was held Sunday at the Steubenville Marina. The first one was held in the summer of 2019. “It was so much fun, and everyone was disappointed that it had to be canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID,” noted event spokesperson Joelle Bucci, who explained it is organized by the Steubenville City Council and that Steubenville Councilwoman at large Kimberly Hahn created the “Meet Me at the Marina” events in 2018 with the Battle of the Bands being one of the events used to showcase the facility. The Battle of the Bands so far has involved Big Red and Central with their bands performing on the large platform by the Ohio River. The program is set up in six alternating performances. The winner of the previous year plays a selection and then the other group goes, back and forth for six songs. Buckets are then passed through the crowd. Some say “Central” and others “Big Red.” The crowd decides who the winner is by voting with money. The money is counted, a winner is determined and announced, and the money is split evenly between both schools. This year, both Band Boosters groups set up concessions, drawings and school spirit items at the back of the park area. Representatives from the boosters coordinated the concessions to provide a complimentary assortment of options for attendees. “We are all looking forward to next year’s battle, and hope to be able to entertain even more people down at the Steubenville Marina,” Bucci noted, adding that, “Both schools wish to thank the city of Steubenville and all who participated in cleaning and decorating the marina park area to prepare for this event. Many compliments were heard that day.”
