Helping students put their best foot forward in a new school year

-- Janice Kiaski

Laura Rauch, left, executive director of the United Way of Jefferson County, and Tami Cashioli, finance director, are shown with some of the remaining estimated 400 pairs of shoes being made available to already-registered recipients as part of the annual United Sole Lace Up for Kids initiative by the United Way of Jefferson County. The shoes are for boys and girls, birth to age 18 or senior in high school who are residents of Jefferson and Harrison counties and who qualify for a free or reduced lunch. Each pair came with five pairs of socks, according to the United Way representatives, who explained the distribution began for pre-registrants during Urban Mission Ministries’ Back-To-School Rally held Aug. 11. The distribution is one that involves sponsors, including the J.C. Williams Foundation and Cardinal Operating Co. Help Me Grow partners with the United Way to help with the application process as part of a program that sees students put their best foot forward in a new pair of shoes as another school year begins.
