Brilliant Lions to collect socks

BRILLIANT — Brilliant Lions Club President Butch Ford, along with members Lamont and Esther McCoy, recently attended the OH3 Zone 7 meeting at the Glen Mill Senior Center in Richmond.

During the Lions’ monthly meeting, Nina Cleaver, Zone 7 chairman, reported there are plans for the Richmond Lions Club to have a grill added to their park. The outdoor appliance be positioned next to the recently facelifted pickleball courts, according to officials. The Richmond and Toronto Lions were the only clubs to report, Cleaver stated.

District clubs will be collecting new socks that will be distributed to shelters. Shelters have mentioned that socks are the most-requested item. Awards will be given in three categories, including the most socks collected by a club, a club which has 20 members or less and a club with 20 to 40 members, and those clubs with more than 40 members. There will be a grand prize for the zone donating the most socks. Awards will be given at the grand banquet. Socks are to be brought to the state convention in a tote or a box labeled with the club’s name, zone number and the number of pairs.

Members were reminded that a drawing basket is due from each club. The drawing will take place during the luncheon meeting at the convention. The convention will be held April 19-20. Pull-tabs from cans are to be brought to the convention.

Club members learned there are many unwanted crayons that get thrown away at the end of the school year. As a result, the crayons turn into a waxy sludge that clogs landfills. Reports from the Crayon Initiative state they can instead be recycled and re-manufactured into new, free crayons for children’s hospitals across the United States. For information on collecting and sending the coloring tools to the Crayon Initiative, visit thecrayoninitiative.org and learn how they will be made into new crayons.

It was reported the Steubenville Lions collected 1,000 pairs of eyeglasses throughout the past year.

Lions Clubs in the district celebrating anniversaries include Doylestown, 90 years; and Cambridge, 100 years.
