Welcoming Christmas
Members of the Weirton Chapter of Church Women United met Friday for their annual Christmas luncheon at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. President Rebecca Turner welcomed 16 women from nine area churches and opened the event with the singing of “O Come All Ye Faithful,” followed by a prayer. Wendy Speer of St. Thomas read from a book entitled “The Giver of Every Good Gift,” written and illustrated by her son. The book began by explaining how St. Nicholas became a saint, and how over time, became Santa Claus. Those in attendance sang several Christmas songs following lunch. Guests then recalled some of their favorite memories from their youth. A thank-you note was read from the Weirton Christian Center in appreciation for the after-school snacks the group donated. The women of Church Women United brought hats, gloves and scarves to the luncheon, with the items to be given to either pupils at Weirton Middle School or one of the elementary schools. Members will not hold a meeting in January, but a planning meeting will take place Feb. 7. The location will be named at a later date.
