Ohio River to be blessed

WEIRTON — The seventh-annual Pan-Orthodox Great Blessing of the Ohio River will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Steubenville Marina.

The event is being sponsored by St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, located at 604 Colliers Way in Weirton. The public is invited to attend the ceremony.

The blessing is done in conjunction with the Feast of Holy Theophany where Christ was baptized by John in the Jordan River, whereby sanctifying the waters, according to officials.

“This seventh river blessing and service has become an annual January event, bringing together the Orthodox churches and their faithful for a joint service,” organizers stated. “The local Orthodox churches are inviting everyone in the community to attend this joyous event.”

Libraries to close early for training

The Follansbee Library will be closing at 4:45 p.m. on Jan. 16 due to the training of its staff members.

The Brooke County Library in Wellsburg will be closing at 5 p.m. that day for staff training, officials announced.

Library to screen drama

FOLLANSBEE — The Follansbee Public Library will show the PG-rated drama “The Forge,” at noon on Jan. 17.

The event is free of charge to attend.

Guests are welcome to bring along a lunch, although popcorn and water will be provided.

Seating for the film is limited.

Book club to meet

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Public Library Book Club will be meeting in-person and virtually to discuss the book “Player One,” written by Ernest Cline.

The club will meet at 5 p.m. on Jan. 30.

Club participants also will receive the book they will be discussing during next month’s book club meeting, library officials announced.

Kiwanis Club to host trivia competition

STEUBENVILLE — The Kiwanis Club of Steubenville will be presenting its 13th-annual Team Trivia Competition.

The event is scheduled to take place at 2 p.m. on March 8 in the commons area of Steubenville High School.

Teams will compete for cash prizes, along with bragging rights, according to Kiwanis officials.

The cost will be $120 per team. There is a maximum of 10 people per team.

Participants are asked to bring their own snacks to the event. In addition to the trivia competition, a 50/50 drawing will be held, as well as a Chinese auction.

McDonald’s offering New Year savings

STEUBENVILLE — On Tuesday, customers frequenting McDonald’s restaurants throughout the area had the opportunity to save on meals listed on the company’s menu.

The savings will continue throughout the new year, according to McDonald’s officials, who said the restaurant has begun its new McValue menu, which features everyday savings.

According to the business, patrons can buy one, add one for $1, receiving breakfast, lunch or dinner menu items for less.

McDonald’s is offering a $5 Meal Deal that includes either a McDouble or a McChicken sandwich, small french fries, a four-piece Chicken McNuggets and a small soft drink.

Additional local offers include any-sized soft drink, tea, iced coffee or hot coffee for $1.

Breakfast sandwiches will cost $2, while a free medium fries will be given to customers who make a $2 minimum purchase.

A 10-piece Chicken McNugget or Big Mac sandwich will be priced at $2, according to the company, and 20 percent will be taken off the total of a purchase that is $10 or more.

There are in-app deals as well, including free medium french fries during Free Fries Fridays.

New users of the app can receive a free McCrispy sandwich, the company announced, as a means of getting more people to utilize its app.

McDonald’s is working with actor and WWE wrestler John Cena, who has partnered with the company to show his fans how he makes the most out of his favorite orders.

Cena said McValue is his go-to choice. This option allows customers to buy one, add one for $1 combo and more.

McDonald’s also announced it is partnering with 16 different brands during the next few weeks.

It has rolled out more than $3 million in promotions, featuring deals such as entertainment offerings on YouTube TV and Roku.

Transportation offers are being made to companies through these promotions, including companies such as American Airlines and Lyft.

Customers are encouraged to download the McDonald’s app so as to save on menu items, to allow for quicker pickup service and to receive points toward free menu foods in the future.
