Toronto Sunrise Seniors celebrate Valentine’s Day

TORONTO — The Toronto Sunrise Seniors celebrated Valentine’s Day Feb. 14 at the Karaffa Recreation Center. Members Joyce Gribben and Don Pritts were named the Valentine’s Day queen and king, respectively, with each receiving a crown, sparkling red lei, candy-filled heart and coffee mug.

President Barbara Pritts welcomed those in attendance, calling the meeting to order. Mary Lou Emery gave the blessing prior to the meal consisting of roasted chicken. Following dinner, members thanked the kitchen committee through a round of applause. Those on the committee included Lynn Miller, Marsha McConnell, Mary Lou Deku and Bob Deku. Each was thanked for the meal, their hard work and the holiday-themed table decorations.

Secretary Karen Martin conducted the roll call of officers and read the minutes from the previous meeting. She then read a letter from Galen Wade, who thanked the seniors for their financial support through the Pat Campbell 5K Run/Walk, which raised money for cancer victims. Due to the absence of both treasurers, Martin provided the financial report.

Pritts addressed a question regarding how long meeting minutes should be maintained and how to dispose of those minutes. Following a discussion, it was decided the executive committee will meet to make those decisions.

Social Secretary Mary Ann Landerfield announced the names of those celebrating a February birthday, after which the group sang happy birthday to all recognized. Two seniors were remembered under the health report and will receive get-well cards, Landerfield said.

Pritts reminded attendees of two upcoming trips being organized by the Toronto Senior Citizens. A trip to Lancaster, Pa., is planned for May 5-9 to see a performance of “Noah,” along with touring Amish Country. A trip to see Neil Diamond at the Ohio Star Theater in Amish Country is scheduled for Aug. 22. Anyone interested, including non-members, should contact Patty Smith at (330) 386-7309 or Karen Krause at (740) 264-5817.

Dale Martin was recognized as the club’s member of the month and presented with a Reisbeck’s gift card. The 50/50 drawing winners of the evening were Emery and Joe Radvansky.

The meeting concluded with announcements, brag time and a joke. Following adjournment, members played a few rounds of bingo. Winners included Donna Farmer, Jackie Collins, Nancy Bodrog, Hank Sheets, Don Pritts, Bea Lytle and Louie Nelson.

The next meeting will be held Friday at Karaffa. Any resident of Ohio 55 years of age or older, is welcomed to join the group. The March kitchen committee will include Garrett, Frank Marino, Betty Mossor and Rex Mossor.
