5k run set for May 3

STEUBENVILLE — A 5k run fundraiser will be held for Francis Bergsma at Jim Wood Park at 9 a.m. May 3. Friends are organizing the event to help Bergsma with medical costs.

According to family and friends, Bergsma collapsed with a severe headache and was taken to Trinity Medical Center West in July. Following a brain scan, it was discovered he had “a fist-sized tumor on his brain.” Transported by medical helicopter to UPMC in Pittsburgh, neurosurgeons removed 90 percent of the tumor the following day; however, two nodules remained, as needed for brain function. A second surgery to remove a cyst was conducted in October, resulting in seven weeks of radiation. Today, Bergsma is “thriving in the face of such great challenges,” friends stated.

His treatment team is recommending gamma blade radiation if the tumor begins to grow, which would cost approximately $200,000. A website has been set up for those wanting to donate. Visit istandwithfrancis.com to contribute. In addition to donations, the 5k run is seeking participants, as well as vendors to attend the event. For information, e-mail dranthonyvento@yahoo.com.
