STEUBENVILLE — The Fort Steuben Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution has begun instituting a new program at each of its monthly meetings to recognize local veterans. The first honoree to be recognized during the Chapter’s Sept. 14 meeting was Vietnam veteran Sgt. Richard Blanc, a lifelong resident of Weirton. Blanc attended Weirton schools and graduated from Weir High in 1966.

Employed by Weirton Steel after graduatiing, he married his high school sweetheart, Karen Watson, in 1968. Two months after their marriage, Blanc was drafted into the Army. He did his basic training in South Carolina and was sent to Vietnam’s Mekong Delta in October 1968, quickly being promoted to the rank of sergeant and squad leader.

To recognize his years of service, Blanc was awarded with two Bronze Stars — one for valor and the other for meritorious service. He received the combat infantry badge, national defense service medal, Vietnam service medal, Republic of Vietnam campaign medal, air medal, expert rifle and sharpshooter. Blanc completed his tour of duty in Vietnam in October 1969 after being honorably discharged from the Army in May 1970. He and his wife have two children, Dennis Blanc and Deena Klink, along with two grandsons, Mason and Max Klink.

Chapter Regent Janet Rymer and America 250 Chairman Francine Hauldren conducted the program, presenting Blanc with a certificate of appreciation and a DAR Vietnam veteran’s pin.
