Democratic Women set holiday party

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Democratic Executive Committee and the Brooke County Democratic Women will hold their annual Christmas party on Thursday. The event will take the place of the groups’ December meetings, according to officials.

The next joint meetings will take place at 6 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Wellsburg Library.

Sheriff to hold veterans lunch

STEUBENVILLE — Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla Jr., will host his annual Christmas luncheon for local veterans at noon on Friday. The event will take place at the sheriff’s department, located at 16001 state Route 7 in Steubenville.

Abdalla is continuing the tradition first started by his father, Fred Abdalla Sr. Past luncheons have included turkey and ham will all of the side dishes and dessert. Those wishing to participate should RSVP by calling (740) 283-8600.

New Cumberland to hold service

NEW CUMBERLAND — A Wreaths Across America ceremony will be held at noon Satturday at the New Cumberland Cemetery. Every year, volunteers gather to honor veterans at thousands of cemeteries across America, as well as in foreign countries on the second Saturday in December.

The program’s motto of “Remember, Honor, Teach,” asks that we remember those who have fallen. honor those still serving and teach the value of freedom to young people. New Cumberland’s event will begin with a short ceremony at the cemetery’s chapel, followed by the placing of the wreaths.

This year, 470 wreaths were donated to honor veterans who are buried in cemetery. This is the village’s sixth year holding the event. Committee members thanked everyone who honor veterans every year. The public is invited to attend the ceremony. The weather forecast is calling for cold temperatures and snow, organizers stated. Those planning to attend are asked to dress warmly, officials announced.

Christmas Eve service at Zion

STEUBENVILLE — Zion United Church of Christ will hold its Christmas Eve service of “Nine Lessons” and carols at 6 p.m. Dec. 24. Leading the service will be the Rev. John Harris. The church is located at 139 N. Fifth St. in Steubenville. The community is welcome to attend.

Retirees set to meet for December

STEUBENVILLE — Steubenville City Schools Retirees attended lunch Nov. 13 at Abdalla’s Tavern and Grille in Stratton.

More than 20 people were in attendance, sharing laughter and humorous stories of times past. Get-well cards were signed, along with Christmas cards.

The group continued its Christmas collection for needy adults throughout the area, with officials noting the final opportunity to donate will be at the retirees’ next luncheon at Pastaio’s in Wintersville. Those who are unable to make the luncheon can send their donation to Linda Holub or Becky Bryan.

Career center announces application

NEW CUMBERLAND — The John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center will apply for reaffirmation of its accreditation with the Commission of the Council on Occupational Education in March.
