WEIRTON — Weirton Medical Center and West Virginia Northern Community College, on Thursday, announced the beginning of a new partnership aimed at providing financial assistance for those interested in joining the field of nursing.

As part of the Future Nurses Program, several local nursing students will have their associates degrees paid for in exchange for a three-year commitment to work within the Weirton Medical Center Tri-State Medical Network.

“To recruit nurses through the excellent West Virginia Northern nursing program is a perfect fit,” said Denise Westwood, chief nursing officer at Weirton Medical. “Some of our finest nurses at WMC came through that very program and we are thrilled to embark on this partnership.”

Linda Jo Shelek, director of nursing at WVNCC, said the new program will be a benefit for WVNCC’s nursing students and Weirton Medical Center, but also the nursing profession.

“Students must not only have the passion to become a nurse, but they must have financial support too. WMC will now remove a tremendous burden for these select students,” Shelek said.

Weirton Medical Center will work with the college to select several students for the program, paying for those students’ nursing school tuition and fees up to $9,100 in the first year, and $5,800 the second year. Promise Scholarship recipients also will be eligible, according to college and hospital officials.

“Our nursing program at WVNCC provides exceptional training for our students and now WMC is going to provide them with an incredible opportunity to fulfill their dreams once they complete our program. We are proud to partner with organizations like WMC that are aligned with our top priority, which is our students’ success,” said Vicki L. Riley, president of WVNCC.

Interested students are encouraged to apply for admission into the WVNCC Nursing Program through June 1 for the upcoming fall semester.
