Creek bank repair is moving forward

WEIRTON — The Weirton Sanitary Board is moving forward with a creek bank repair project for a condition which officials say is putting a sewer line and a group of houses in danger.

Utilities Director Butch Mastrantoni explained Thursday the problem on Harmon Creek along Cove Road arose after the recent rainstorms.

“As a result of recent rainfall, a section of creek bank has eroded,” Mastrantoni said.

The eroding creek bank is encroaching on a 24-inch sewer line, he explained, which officials said carries flow from portions of Colliers, East Weirton, Weirton Medical Center and Angeline Estates, among other areas.

Mastranatoni said if the erosion would result in damage to the line, it would lead to sanitary material leaking into Harmon Creek and, eventually, into the Ohio River.

“That’s our primary concern here,” Mastrantoni said.

Crews have proposed a reinforcement project, using a set of 90 concrete blocks, to prevent the bank from eroding further, at an estimated cost of $10,000 for materials, with a cost of up to $5,000 for engineering services from Thrasher Engineering.

“The cost is fixed on my employees, and we have the equipment,” Mastrantoni said.

Assistant Director Rick Ohalek already has reached out to the Hancock County Commission, and will speak with city and state officials, about the possibility of assisting with the project.

In other business, the Sanitary Board approved:

• The sanitary department’s 2018-2019 budget;

• The repair of the spare pump at the Crystal Lane lift station, through Service Pipe and Supply, at a cost of $5,469;

• The repair of the raw sewage pump at the Mellon Street lift station, through Precision Pump and Valve, at a cost of $4,261;

• The annual purchase of dry polymer for the rotary press, not to exceed $19,932

• A settlement for a damage claim at the Serbian Picnic Grounds.
