Capito, Manchin announce local FEMA funding

WHEELING — Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., chair of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, and Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Wednesday announced $4.4 million for West Virginia through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Public Assistance grant program.

Funding will assist the West Virginia Division of Highways with repairs to roadways in Hancock, Lincoln, Monongalia, and Ohio counties that were damaged as a result of storms in February 2018. The DOH will receive $1.1 million for repairs in Ohio County and $1 million for repairs in Hancock County. There are no specific projects mentioned for the funding.

“West Virginians know all too well the damage that flooding can bring to our communities, but we always pull our neighbors and ourselves up and move forward,” Capito said. “As chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, I have worked to ensure West Virginia communities and communities across America have the resources they need to recover from natural disasters. I am pleased this funding is coming to our state to repair roads that West Virginia families depend on, and I will continue to be a strong partner in future recovery efforts.”

“I am grateful that the WV Division of Highways have received these grants.” Manchin said. “This year, our state has withstood many weather-related disasters, which have unfortunately taken a toll on our roadways across the state. This funding will help repair and clear roadways that have been damaged by severe storms, flooding, mudslides, and landslides for safer travel. As a member of the Appropriations committee, I will continue to seek similar funding for West Virginia in the future.”

Another $1.2 million will go to repairs in Lincoln County with Monongalia County work receiving nearly $1.1 million.
