Project HOPE plans spa day

WHEELING — Project H.O.P.E., Wheeling’s street medicine team, will hold a day of pampering for local women who are experiencing homelessness.

The theme for this event will be “Hope is Stronger Than Fear.” The spa day event will be held from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday at the McLure Hotel ballroom, 1200 Market St.

“Volunteers from several organizations will help to create this very special day for these deserving women in our community,” said Crystal Bauer, director of Project H.O.P.E.

As part of its mission to foster relationships, Project H.O.P.E. will bring this group of vulnerable women together to empower and educate them on domestic violence, women’s health issues, financial management and mental health care.

In addition to the educational component of the event, the women will be treated to makeovers, manicures and haircuts which will be provided by Ulta Beauty Stylists and community volunteers.

Lunch will be provided by Texas Roadhouse and dessert from Whisk Bakery and Catering. A photo backdrop with props will be in place for photographs. Each participant will receive a commemorative T-shirt and gift bag containing various items for the women to pamper themselves.

Project H.O.P.E. is a program of the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department. The team represents a collaboration of medical, nursing, social work, pastoral care and other health care professionals who serve together on the streets and in the homeless shelters of Wheeling, providing basic medical care and coordinating medical and social services for patients.

The group’s mission is to ensure equal access to medical care for unsheltered men, women and children in the local community, bridging the gap between the homeless and the health care system through direct street outreach.

Health Officer Dr. William C. Mercer, Dr. Thomas G. Wack Jr. and Bauer lead the medical team that works to create relationships by dispensing medical care with compassion and respect while maintaining patients’ dignity.
