WELLSBURG — The Downtown Wellsburg Revitalization Group plans to beautify the community were rained out last week but members and other volunteers are set to gather again Saturday for a community street clean-up and picnic.

This Saturday will be the second time the group hosts a clean-up, with volunteers gathering at 9 a.m.

“It was a real success last year,” said Alex Weld, chairwoman. “It went really well. We had between 40 and 50 volunteers.”

Weld added it wasn’t just members of the Downtown Wellsburg Revitalization Group.

“Some volunteers were last minute,” Weld said. “I remember my husband, Ryan, was painting a curb in front of a house and the owner came outside. He asked what we were doing and my husband explained. The neighbor went back inside and came back out in gardening clothes and began helping. It was really great.”

Weld describes the clean-up as “a great community activity.”

“We get a lot of visitors in downtown Wellsburg,” noted Weld. “There are a lot of businesses and hopefully more to come. Even if the clean-up doesn’t transform the town it is still nice to contribute.”

Similar to last year, there will be a community picnic following the clean-up.

“Even though it wasn’t planned it is nice that the picnic now coincides with Memorial Day since we were rained-out last weekend,” joked Weld.

The picnic is open to the entire community, not just those who volunteered. There will be hot dogs, chips, drinks and cookies.

Weld thanked the sponsors who helped with the event which include Eagle Manufacturing, Traubert’s Pharmacy, K Construction and Community Bank.
