Weirton Christian Center offers summer food program

WEIRTON — The Weirton Christian Center has announced its sponsorship of the federally funded Summer Food Service Program.

As part of the program, free Lunch and a snack will be available to all children, ages 18 years and under, who would like to participate.

Lunch will be served at the Weirton Christian Center, 117 Ivy St. in Weirton, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., beginning Monday and going through Aug. 1. In addition, between 3 and 4 p.m. the Christian Center will be serving a snack. The center will be closed on Fridays and also June 20 for West Virginia Day and July 4 in celebration of Independence Day.

The Weirton Christian Center’s Summer Program runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily for pupils in Kindergarten through eighth grade these same dates. A Kindergarten Readiness program for those entering Kindergarten will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. will also provide children with lunch at the center. These children are welcome to stay through the end of the program, at 4 p.m.

“A nutritious meal is important for children to learn, play and remain active during the summer months. Remember, Hunger Doesn’t Take a Summer Vacation!” said Executive Director Kim Weaver. “And our program will help prevent summer learning loss, while school is not in session with a summer reading program and computer labs with Lexia and iXL software.”
